Job Summary:
The CT Technologist is responsible for performing diagnostic procedures using Computerized Tomography (CT) equipment. This includes acquiring and analyzing patient imaging data, ensuring patient safety, administering contrast materials, and managing image transfer systems. The role supports a high standard of patient care, collaboration with clinical teams, and continuous quality improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Identification & Safety:
Verifies patient identity using professional protocols and confirms patient history. Ensures patient understanding and comfort, providing assistance to patients and families as needed. Confirms and documents pregnancy status for patients of childbearing age. Maintains patient safety and confidentiality at all times.
CT Scanning Procedures:
Obtains diagnostic images according to established protocols. Manipulates and reconstructs images using multi-planar and 3D techniques. Demonstrates expertise in CT algorithms, selecting appropriate window and level settings based on anatomical area.
Contrast Administration:
Administers oral contrast to adult and pediatric patients following established guidelines. Establishes IV access and administers intravenous contrast using proper procedures. Evaluates patient eligibility for contrast use, verifying necessary lab values per protocol.
Image Transfer & Documentation:
Operates PACS and transmits images to QC, EMR (Epic), and PACS systems accurately. Verifies and segments images at the QC station; utilizes IMPAX tools to confirm successful image transmission. Completes, modifies, and cancels imaging orders in a timely manner to prevent duplicate billing. Ensures all patient and imaging data is accurate and in compliance with UNC policies.
Additional Duties:
Maintains an efficient workflow and proactively assists with complex cases and new research procedures. Produces high-quality diagnostic images and correlates them with clinical reports and charts. Keeps the work environment clean and organized; documents incidents for departmental quality improvement. Precepts and mentors new employees and students, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
Required Education:
Completion of an accredited educational program in Radiologic Science.
Certifications & Licensure:
Must be registered or registry-eligible with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) . Registry-eligible candidates must provide documentation of graduation from an accredited program. Advanced certification in CT is required. Registry must be obtained within one year of employment and maintained annually. Must maintain current Healthcare Provider BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
