X-Ray Technician Job Description The X-Ray Technician is responsible for providing patient care under the direction of a physician or licensed health care provider. This role involves performing a variety of x-ray procedures, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining the quality of diagnostic radiographs. Responsibilities Perform a variety of x-ray procedures as directed by a licensed healthcare provider, including positioning patients, taking radiographs, and applying correct techniques. Obtain quality diagnostic radiographs as quickly as the exam or patient condition allows while maintaining a repeat rate of 2% or less. Use radiation protection and shielding materials when required. Maintain and monitor radiation safety measures to ensure the safety of patients and staff, including rotating radiation badges. Review x-ray images for quality and accuracy. Ensure all equipment complies with state regulations, is maintained, documented, and kept in good working order and clean. Act as a liaison between patients, physicians, and medical support staff, demonstrating a caring and professional manner to ensure patient comfort. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Recognize and respond appropriately to urgent or emergent situations. Order and maintain proper inventory of radiologic supplies. Assist orthopedic technicians as needed with the removal of splints and braces. Assist physicians in back-office duties, including rooming patients, taking vital signs, and recording patient history. Assist patients with wheelchairs as needed. Perform associated clerical tasks, including scheduling, filing, and records requests. Maintain a professional appearance and personal conduct at all times. Adhere to employer work practices as described in the Employee Handbook. Collaborate as a team member within the x-ray department and with other departments. Document work processes as required. Perform other duties as assigned. Essential Skills Ability to take vital signs. Ability to maintain quality control. Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectively and take direction from multiple sources. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public. Ability to assist in a variety of treatments and medications. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to manage interactions with difficult people. Additional Skills & Qualifications Thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology to perform x-ray exams. Knowledge of digital radiology equipment. Knowledge of safety hazards common to radiology, including equipment, body mechanics, and patient movement. Skilled in identifying equipment problems. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment. Ability to act calmly and effectively in a busy or stressful environment. Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and in writing. Maintain current CPR certification. Work Environment Work is conducted in a radiology department setting, which includes working with and around x-ray equipment. Exposure to ionizing radiation, communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a medical clinic environment is possible. Work is intermittently performed in an office setting, which is well-lit and ventilated with adequate space. Occasional travel may be required to cover patient care or attend meetings at another location.
