Job Purpose:
Assumes administrative authority, responsibilityand accountability for the provision of a program of activitiesdesigned to meet the interests and enhance the functional abilitiesand self-esteem of each Resident. Manages employees to provideRecreation Services according to the facility’s philosophy. Incollaboration with the Administrator, allocates resources in anefficient and economic manner to ensure each resident achieves thehighest practicable physical, mental and psycho social well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
Gathers information to design Recreationprograms that meet the functional levels, needs and interests ofeach resident. Develops and provides individual and groupactivities for Residents that reflect interests of Residents, areoffered at hours convenient to Residents (morning, afternoon,evening, weekend) that appeal to both men and women, take place ina variety of locations and include special seasonal events. Monthlyactivities calendar given to each Resident. Develops and implementseffective procedures to ensure that all Residents are informed ofupcoming activities. Develops and updates Recreation Servicespolicies and procedures that reflect the philosophy and mission ofthe facility. Participates in the development of the departmentbudget. Provides relevant financial information to Administratorregarding department financial needs and status. Hires and retainsqualified, competent staff to provide Recreation to attain ormaintain highest practicable physical, mental and psycho socialwell-being. Conducts interviews, provides regular performancereviews, takes appropriate job actions, reviews job actions takenby subordinates to assure that staff meet qualification andperformance standards and can perform all essential functions ofthe job. Maintain current skills and knowledge through continuingeducation. Applies information to job responsibilities.
Participates in fire and disaster drills. In event of an emergency,carries out assigned duties to assure Resident safety. Plans andorganizes Recreational Activities as follows: Monthly- Activitiescalendar for Residents. “News & Views” Newsletter for theResidents, staff and waitlist. Schedule entertainment at WhitakerGlen (piano, singing groups, variety of musical entertainment)Schedule outings for the Residents (museums, plays, luncheons,tours, shopping) Planning calendar for activity assistant. DailyEncourages Residents to participate in activities. Checks on theResidents (by request) with daily phone calls. Weekly Schedulegrocery shopping. Schedule regular shopping and banking trips(department stores, malls, etc.) Organize exercise program threedays a week. Organize yoga class one day a week. Provide Residentswith weekly schedule of events as well as reminder flyers/noticeswhen needed. Supervise strength training program as needed.
Schedule librarian two days a week. Bi-Weekly Organize Vesperservices. Organize movies and provide snacks for Residents. Set-upbingo and provide prizes. Provide driver for trip to Walmart.
Provide snacks and organize social hour for Residents to socialize.
Supervises Activities Assistant and Fitness Instructor. GeneralPlan and organize two travel trips a year (overnight trips with achartered bus) Plan and organize annual Spring Fling event. Meetnew Residents when they move in. Purchase supplies for RecreationDepartment as needed. (bingo prizes, movie snacks, games, artsupplies, movies, books, decorations, etc.) Provide activities topromote socialization (yearly puzzle challenge, ice cream socials,Bingo, parties, movie night, vespers services, birthday dinnercelebrations, entertainment, yearly Great Decisions class,presentations) Acts as Librarian between Whitaker Glen and WakeCounty Library.
Qualifications Minimum Education Required:
Minimumtwo (2) years college education with courses in recreation,education, social work, other behavioral sciences or clinicalservices.
Minimum Experience Required:
Two (2) years’ experience ina social or recreational program within the past five years, withone (1) year full-time employment in a resident activities programin a long term health care setting; or, One (1) year in asupervisory role within a recreation program. MinimumLicensure/Certification Required by
Law:
Eligible for certificationas therapeutic Recreation Specialist or as an Activitiesprofessional by a recognized accrediting body.
