JOB GOAL

Provide system-wide health services and to serve as a liaison between the school, the medical community, and other agencies involved in the health and welfare of students.

QUALIFICATIONS

An Associate’s Degree is Nursing is required. A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred. Experience in school nursing and/or pediatrics is preferred. Valid license from the Alabama Board of Nursing to practice as a registered nurse. Any other certificate required by state law. Hold current Health Care Provider certification. Certified Health Care Trainer. Ability to provide effective staff development and in-service activities. Ability to supervise LPNs, when directed, and document supervision. Knowledge of current general medical and pediatric nursing practices. Knowledge of effective procedures and practices for vision, hearing and other appropriate health screening activities. Must be able to work flexible hour assignments throughout the school year as needed to meet students’ health needs. Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities. Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information. Valid Alabama driver’s license and the ability to have access to appropriate transportation to travel between work sites throughout the school system. Effective oral and written communication skills. Punctuality and regular attendance.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain an organized system of reporting, documenting, and filing student/staff records Organize and maintain current student health records Plan, implement and supervise health program screenings and activities such as vision, hearing, spinal, height, weight, asthma, medication administration and documentation, immunization assessment and follow-up Attend annual state department of education mandated trainings Provide in-service training for staff related to Health Care Plans, Epi-Pens, Diabetic Awareness, CPR, Standard Precautions, Blood-Borne Pathogens Exposure Plan, and other topics to meet the health needs of employees and students Contribute to the education of the 504 and special education students with health needs by developing a healthcare plan, planning and providing appropriate nursing care services, and attending 504 and special education meetings Collaborate with other school professionals, parents, and caregivers to meet the health, developmental, and educational needs of the students, and develop individual health care plans for students with special health care needs Communicate and consult with parents of students who (may) have health problems Communicate and consult with doctors, public health officials and other health care providers as appropriate Aid in primary prevention and control of communicable diseases Train designated personnel in the administration of medications and the operation of healthcare equipment (e.g., AEDs) Monitor designated licensed personnel in the performance of invasive procedures Provide home or hospital visits when needed Administer first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures, as needed Instruct teachers on screening students for health problems Recommend exclusion and readmission of students in compliance with applicable infectious and contagious diseases protocols Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law Assist Principals and other health services employees in the maintenance and monitoring of school health records Maintain inventory of medical supplies and equipment Perform any other duties as assigned This job description describes the general nature of the work performed by an employee assigned to this position.
