Travel The Registered Nurse (RN) in Labor and Delivery(L&D) is responsible for providing comprehensive care to womenduring labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period. The RNin this specialty is skilled in managing both routine and high-riskpregnancies, monitoring fetal and maternal well-being, andassisting with deliveries. The L&D nurse collaborates withobstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, and other healthcareprofessionals to provide safe, compassionate, and effective care toboth mothers and newborns. /n/n
Key Responsibilities:

Pre-Labor and Admission Assessment:
/n /n
- Assess and monitor thehealth of pregnant women at various stages of labor, includinggathering health histories, vital signs, and physical assessments./n
- Perform non-stress tests (NSTs), monitor fetal heart tones,and evaluate uterine activity for signs of labor progression. /n
- Educate patients on labor and delivery processes, pain managementoptions, and what to expect during childbirth. /n /n /n

LaborSupport and Monitoring:
/n /n
- Monitor the progress of laborthrough regular assessment of contraction patterns, cervicaldilation, fetal heart rate, and maternal vital signs. /n
- Administer medications, including epidurals, Pitocin, and painrelief options, as prescribed, and monitor their effects. /n
- Provide continuous emotional support and pain management throughoutthe labor process, using comfort measures, including positioning,breathing techniques, and offering encouragement. /n
- Assist withamniotomy, if necessary, and other procedures as directed by thehealthcare team. /n /n /n

Delivery:

- Assist obstetricians or midwives during vaginal deliveries,including providing instrumentation assistance, suctioning, andother necessary actions during the birth. /n
- Participate incesarean section procedures by ensuring the sterile field,assisting with the delivery process, and providing immediatenewborn care after birth. /n
- Perform neonatal resuscitation andinitial assessment of the newborn’s health immediately afterdelivery. /n /n /n

Postpartum Care:
/n /n
- Monitor the healthand recovery of both the mother and the newborn in the immediatepostpartum period, including assessing vital signs, bleeding, anduterine tone. /n
- Assist with breastfeeding support, includingteaching proper latch techniques, positioning, and addressing anyconcerns related to infant care. /n
- Provide education onpostpartum recovery, self-care, and newborn care, such asdiapering, bathing, and recognizing signs of illness. /n /n /n

Documentation and Reporting:

- Document all assessments,interventions, medications, and patient progress accurately in theelectronic health record (EHR) to maintain compliance with hospitalpolicies and legal standards. /n
- Maintain accurate and timelyrecords of labor and delivery processes, including patient andfetal monitoring results. /n /n /n

Collaboration andCommunication:

- Work closely with obstetricians,anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and other healthcare teammembers to plan and implement individualized care for each patient./n
- Communicate clearly with patients and families about theprogress of labor, potential complications, and available options,ensuring that informed consent is obtained for procedures whennecessary. /n /n /n

Infection Control and Safety:

- Follow infection control procedures to maintain a safe and sterileenvironment for labor, delivery, and postpartum care. /n
- Ensurethat all equipment used during labor and delivery is properlysterilized and functioning, including fetal monitoring devices, IVpumps, and delivery instruments. /n /n /n

Emergency andHigh-Risk Situations:
/n /n
- Recognize signs of complications,such as fetal distress, preeclampsia, and hemorrhage, and initiateappropriate interventions or escalate care as needed. /n
- Respondto obstetric emergencies, such as shoulder dystocia, uterinerupture, and neonatal resuscitation, utilizing appropriateprotocols and teamwork. /n
- Administer medications andinterventions for high-risk pregnancies, including managingcomplications like hypertension, gestational diabetes, orinfections. /n /n /n

Patient Education and Advocacy:

- Provide education and support to patients and families regardinglabor, delivery options, newborn care, and postpartum recovery. /n
- Advocate for patient preferences and informed decision-making,ensuring that patients have access to the resources they need tomake choices about their care.
