When hospitals cannot provide theadvanced care, expertise and new treatment options their patientsrequire, they turn to us Program Description Hartford Hospital hasimplemented a comprehensive graduate nurse transition to practiceprogram incorporating nursing core competencies focusing on ourvalues of excellence, safety, caring and integrity. Graduate nursesare hired into the organization in cohorts. The cohort membersattend nursing orientation together and are followed through theseries of educational opportunities over a 24 week period. Eachgraduate nurse will have dedicated preceptors to guide them throughthe process of orientation, as well as a committed unit based nurseeducator and manager. Graduate nurse orientation includes a varietyof experiential learning modalities which provide opportunities forassimilation and application of clinical theory and concepts tobedside practice. Hartford Hospital uses a standardized on-linedidactic educational program designed by the governing body ofcritical care nursing (American Association of Critical CareNursing) called the “ECCO” program (Essentials of Critical CareOrientation). This program along with classroom instruction,clinical experiences and simulation provide a blended approach tolearning designed to enhance the knowledge and growth of each newnurse. Every graduate nurse is also automatically enrolled in thehospital based Nurse Residency program which incorporates graduatenurses from across the organization. This program, besides beingeducational, brings our graduate nurses together promoting socialsupport and relevant discussion of common situations encountered inthe first year of practice. Once the orientation period iscompleted, participant evaluations provide the opportunity forvaluable feedback used to impact and enhance the experience ofcurrent and future graduate nurses.
Eligible Critical Care units:
In critical care, our nurses are highly skilled and trained;helping to provide expertise at the bedside and the highest qualitycare in the most compassionate way. The units heavily rely on ateam-based mentality in which all healthcare team members workcongruently to achieve the best outcomes based on the HartfordHealthcare values of Safety, Excellence, Integrity and Caring. Onlythe below departments are accepting applications for New GraduateRNs at this time: Medicine ICU (B11i) : The Medical Intensive CareUnit is a 16-bed unit that provides care to patients with a widerange of complex, highly acute medical issues. These issues includebut are not limited to; respiratory failure, gastrointestinalbleeding, liver injury/failure, kidney injury/failure, sepsis, anddrug and alcohol withdrawal. Under the supervision of a CriticalCare Pulmonologist, the unit is staffed 24 hours-a-day with a teamof Physician Assistants, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, andmedical house staff physicians consisting of interns and residents.
Cardiac ICU (B10i) : In the Hartford HealthCare Heart and VascularInstitute, Cardiac Intensive Care unit’s population primarilyconsists of patients with myocardial infarctions, cardiogenicshock, advanced heart failure, and post-cardiac arrest. Nurses aretrained in the use of specialized equipment to monitor and treatthese patient populations.
Some of these are:
transvenouspacemakers, intra-aortic balloon pumps, temporary ventricularassist devices, pulmonary artery catheters, and targetedtemperature management. The unit works closely with the CardiacCatherization lab, Electrophysiology department, and theCardiovascular Surgical Team. Neuro-Surgical ICU (C9i) : TheNeuro-Surgical ICU is a 17 bed adult inpatient unit caring forcritically ill Neuro-science and Neuro-surgical patients. Ourpatient population consists of stroke, head and spinal cord traumaand brain hemorrhage. These patients require nurses who specializein monitoring intracranial pressures, brain tissue oxygenation andhemo-dynamic monitoring. RN’s in this specialty also must have afamily-centered approach because of the critical nature of ourpatients. We also work closely with our Neuro-intensivist,Physician Assistants and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses toprovide the highest quality of care for our patients. Program Requirements:
The ICU Nurse ResidentProgram requires that applicants have a demonstrated history ofworking in a critical care environment in one or more of thefollowing: Experience as a Nursing Assistant in a critical careunit with demonstrated knowledge of the ICU population CompletedCapstone in an ICU setting You must be licensed to practiceprofessional nursing as a Registered Nurse in the State ofConnecticut or be eligible and able to obtain licensure to practicein CT prior to a start date.

Connecticut RN License required prior to startdate. Must graduate from a BSN program by August 2025 . Experiencein an Adult ICU as a Nurse Tech or completion of a CapstoneClinical rotation in an Adult
