69 The Surgical andNeuroscience Intensive Care Unit (SICU and Neuro ICU) has acombined total of 30 intensive care beds designed to providespecialized care to the critically ill adult (14 and older)patient. The unit has a usual 50/50 split of patient populationbetween the neuro and surgical patient population. The focus ofcare is includes patients with life-threatening conditions relatedto major elective and emergency surgical procedures, multi-trauma,traumatic brain injury, spinal injury, stroke, seizure,sepsis/multi-organ system failure, hemodynamic instability andfailure to wean. The SICU and Neuro ICU patient needs encompass butare not limited to comprehensive physical assessments, intensivemonitoring, treatment of laboratory values, ventilator managementand hemodynamic monitoring. SICU-Neuro ICU nurses require thefollowing skill set
- ICP monitoring via EVD or bolt, spinaldrains/catheters, brain oxygen monitoring, Artic Sun therapy,continuous EEG, intra-arterial catheter, non-invasive cardiacoutput, mechanical ventilation, continuous renal replacementtherapy, reconstructive flap monitoring, and massive bloodtransfusion among others.
Nursing will support the followingon-unit procedures including placement of arterial lines, centrallines, external ventricular drains and ICP monitors, SEPS drains,bedside bronchoscopy, abdominal washouts, tracheostomy,percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement, lumbarpunctures, chest tubes, pigtail drains and others.
The nurse isresponsible for:
- Implementation of physician orders, administersmedications, starts IVs, performs treatments, procedures andspecial tests, and document treatment as required by company policyand local/state/federal rules and regulations.
- Order, interpret,and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess patients’conditions.
- Assess and evaluate patient needs for, and responsesto, care rendered.
- Apply sound nursing judgment in patient caremanagement decisions.
- Provide primary and emergency care foroccupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses.
- Administer over-the-counter and prescription medications asordered.
- Collaborate with the nursing team to create a Plan ofCare for all patients.
- Direct and guide ancillary personnel andmaintain standards of professional nursing.
- Graduate of aprofessional academic nursing program in which a Diploma, AssociateDegree or Baccalaureate Degree is conferred
- Must hold current NYSRegistered Nurse license
- Obtain and maintains certification inBasic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Excellent communication, prioritization, organizational andtime-management skills
- Possess knowledge of quality concepts,principles, and problem-solving tools and techniques anddemonstrates ability to apply in support of departmental andpatient care quality improvement.
