The Respiratory Care Practitioner Level I (RCP I) is a healthcareprofessional who is a graduate of an AMA-Approved Program inRespiratory Care, is licensed by the State of Connecticut as an RCPand is recognized by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). The RCP performs avariety of clinical activities in the assessment, treatment, andeducation of the patient with respiratory problems. Under medicaldirection, an RCP is accountable to comply with departmentalpolicies, guidelines, accepted respiratory care practices, as wellas assumes responsibility and accountability for recommending andcoordinating respiratory care to patients. Essential duties andresponsibilities are described herein and include other duties asassigned. The successful completion of these duties will beassessed by the department supervisors, coordinator and/or manager.

While being a part of the Bridgeport Hospital Respiratory Therapyteam it is expected that therapists commit to the practices andbehaviors outlined in Safety Starts with Me (HRO) and theRespiratory Therapy Department Standards of Performance.

Clinical Applicationof Respiratory Care:

Functions efficiently, resourcefully andskillfully in providing patients optimum age-specific respiratorycare. 1.1 Assesses patient’s pulmonary status employing basic andadvanced skills, which include reviewing the medical chart, patientinterview, physical examination, and interpretation of blood gases.

Demonstrates proficiency and consistency with all assessmentskills. 2.

Documentation and Written Communications:

Contributes toeffective communications within the department throughdocumentation of services administered, changes in patient’sclinical status and therapeutic objectives. 2.1 Accurately, recordsall care provided via electronic medical record (EMR). Identifiespatient on written documents by using the medical record number(MRN) and patient labels as required by department and hospitalpolicy. Maintains patient confidentiality with documentationpractices. 3.

Consultation, Collaboration, and Communication:

Communicates clearly and appropriately with co-workers.

Demonstrates a cooperative team spirit and leadership, effectivelycontributing to excellence of patient care. 3.1 Patient reportinformation is appropriate and conveys current patient status. Usesbest practice when giving report and attentively and courteouslyaccepts report in order to facilitate transition from one shift tothe next. Accurately, completely and concisely conveys all relevantclinical information on patient’s clinical course and status withreport. 4.

Self Development, Professionalism and Leadership:

Assumes responsibility for maintaining clinical expertise throughcontinuing education, professional growth, and development.

Functions as charge therapist, upon request, in absence of shiftsupervisor. 4.1 Assumes responsibility for professionalself-development by demonstrating ability to function as resourceregarding current trends within the profession and new or advancedprocedures/equipment in department. Qualifications EDUCATIONAssociates of Science degree and certificate of completion of anAMA-Approved Respiratory Care Program and current license by theState of Connecticut as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.

Registration by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).Bachelor of Science Degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum one-yearacute care experience as a Respiratory Care Practitioner preferred.

Potential Candidate must meet mandatory probationary time toadvance in career ladder progression.

LICENSURE

Current state ofConnecticut Respiratory Therapy License RRT Credential Current BLSat the Healthcare Provider Level Current ACLS at the HealthcareProvider Level NRP prior to Newborn/Pediatrics training

SPECIALSKILLS

Excellent oral and written communication. Excellentorganizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to work understressful conditions. Basic computer literacy.

PHYSICAL

DEMANDWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularlyrequired to stand; walk; use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel;reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. They are occasionallyrequired to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. They mustfrequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific visionabilities required include close vision, distance vision, colorvision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjustfocus. The employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborneparticles. They are occasionally exposed to toxic or causticchemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise levelin the work environment is usually moderate. Incumbents as well asexternal and internal applicants who become disabled must be ableto perform the essential job functions with or without theassistance of reasonable accommodation as determined on a case bycase basis.
