The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is the state of Florida’s social services agency. Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders. Northeast Florida State Hospital (NEFSH) is a 613-bed, licensed mental health treatment facility that provides person-centered services to adults suffering from severe and persistent mental illness. The hospital, located in Macclenny, was established in 1959 and is the largest state operated civil treatment facility.

This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as a Advanced Practitioner Registered Nurse at the Northeast Florida State Hospital. This position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented. This is a highly responsible and professional position in a large mental health treatment facility. The incumbent is expected to maintain a positive and professional attitude and manner at all times. The incumbent is this position performs duties in the expanded role of advanced practice professional nursing in providing primary physical healthcare and performing certain medical acts consistent with licensure as an A.P.R.N., education and training. The incumbent in this position identifies physical health-related problems, plans and implements medical / nursing care to resolve identified problems, screens for potential health problems and engages in the teaching of general health care and follows professional ethics and standards in an outcome-oriented management system, while maintaining sensitivity to the constitutional rights of patients.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:
Evaluates abnormal physical conditions and illness of hospital patients and prescribes medication as necessary. Conducts daily rounds in assigned ward. Provides coverage in the NEFSH Medical Triage Area (MTA) as directed. Conducts sick calls on assigned wards, provides accurate diagnosis of medical problems and provides appropriate treatment and follow-up care. Provides other treatments and performs minor surgical procedures as needed based on experience and training, such as, but not limited to: incision and drainage of abscess / cyst, removal of foreign bodies, suturing etc. Evaluates medical history, physical findings and pertinent laboratory findings of individuals and if appropriate, initiates further diagnostic laboratory testing, consulting the physician as needed. Monitors and provides treatment for individuals with multiple medical problems, many of which have complicated medical problems, including HIV and Hepatitis C. Carefully monitors for side effects (some potentially fatal) of medications used to treat these conditions. Monitors, initiates and alters medication and treatment orders. Initiates and updates monthly treatment and immunization orders according to Northeast Florida State Hospital policy. Writes monthly medical summaries on designated persons. Refers individual(s) to other health care professionals and specialty clinics as appropriate for specialized services. Coordinates the services required to meet the individuals needs for primary health care.
Accepts clinical assignments based on hospital needs as directed by the Chief of Primary Care Services or their designee. Performs other related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position: Knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques.

Skill in performing uncomplicated surgical procedures.
Ability to administer prescribed medications.
Ability to perform complete physical appraisals of patients.
Ability to identify and evaluate illnesses.
Ability to initiate diagnostic laboratory tests and evaluate the results.

Ability to work with patients having a variety of physical problems.
Ability to compile and evaluate medical histories and other clinical and laboratory data.
Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Minimum Qualifications:
Certification as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in accordance with Florida Statute 464, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in nursing and four years of professional nursing experience, two years of which must have been in a ARNP capacity.
A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in nursing can substitute for two years of the required general professional nursing experience. Candidate Profile (application) must be completed in its entirety. Include supervisor names and phone numbers for all periods of employment.
