JOB TITLE:

JOB OVERVIEW
Responsible for providing nursing care to the patient under the direction of a physician or health care provider, and managing the PACU elements related to OBS or Ambulatory surgery.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO
- Welcomes patients by greeting them, and introducing themselves by name and title.
- Completes the clinical handoff between the OR and the patient recovery area(s), ensuring that the debriefing and instructions from the surgeon and anesthesia provider are understood and implemented.
- Ensures that the patient is placed on monitoring equipment and that vitals are recorded in a uniform manner. Monitors IV bags and replace them when indicated or directed. Discontinues IV’s when appropriate. Reports abnormalities to the surgeon.
- Documents all care in the medical chart, and ensures that all critical information has been gathered from the patients.
- Coordinates patient discharge process along with surgeon and anesthesia provider.
- Directs staff outside the OR in the absence of the surgeon, anesthesia provider, or clinical manager.
- Serves as the primary advocate for the patient in recovery, ensuring they are comfortable and that their immediate needs are met.
- Ensures that recovery area is stocked to meet clinical needs.
- Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping patient care information confidential.
- Serves and protects the physician or health care provider practice by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards.
- Enhances health care practice reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
- Maintain professional appearance and rapport with patients and staff.
- Other tasks as assigned by a supervisor or provider.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Current RN licensure. 2. ACLS certification (AHA)
EXPERIENCE
6 – 12 months of professional experience in a clinical setting preferred.
SKILLS:
1. Ability to administer a variety of treatments & medications, including all medications on the crash cart. 2. Strong organizational, interpersonal, and quality control skills. 3. Ability to use various types of equipment for examination and treatment procedures. 4. Ability to take and record vital signs, and professionally report to surgeons and anesthesia personnel. 5. Ability to communicate effectively in the English language. 6. Requires adherence to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, attendance, punctuality and personal appearance. 7. Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships with providers, management, and peers. 8. Ability to insert and discontinue intravenous catheters. 9. Leadership and initiative skills for direction of staff outside the OR. 10. Maintain current RN licensure & CPR (ACLS) certification.
Physical Requirements:
Hearing:
Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone. Able to use stethoscope and respond to verbal questions.
Speaking:
Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone.
Vision:
Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of patient and reading information from printed sources and computer screens.
Other:
Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds unassisted, including assisting patients when required. Adequate physical ability including sufficient manual dexterity to perform the requisite health care service, including injections. Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting and sitting, with some heavy lifting, pushing and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift.
