Pay Information$1,802 per week About The Position A Registered Nurse (RN) – BoneMarrow Transplant (BMT) specializes in the care of patientsundergoing bone marrow or stem cell transplants. This role involvesworking with patients who have hematologic disorders such asleukemia, lymphoma, and other blood cancers. The BMT RN plays acritical role in patient assessment, administration of treatments,managing complications, providing education, and supporting bothpatients and their families throughout the transplant process. Thisposition requires expertise in hematology, oncology nursing, andtransplant care.

Key Responsibilities :
Patient Assessment and Care:

Perform comprehensive assessments of patients before, during, andafter their bone marrow transplant, including evaluating theiroverall health, lab results, vital signs, and organ function.

Monitor for early signs of complications such as graft-versus-hostdisease (GVHD), infections, and organ rejection. Assess anddocument the patient’s condition, including any symptoms such asfever, pain, or weakness, and promptly notify the healthcare teamof significant changes. Perform routine assessments to monitorblood counts, fluid status, and nutritional needs.

Bone MarrowTransplant Administration :

Administer chemotherapy,immunosuppressive agents, and growth factors as part of thepreparatory regimen for stem cell or bone marrow transplantation.

Coordinate the infusion of the bone marrow or stem cells, ensuringthe correct stem cell product, patient identification, andmonitoring of infusion reactions. Manage the administration ofblood products (e.g., red blood cells, platelets) as needed forpatients with low blood counts after the transplant.

Management ofPost-Transplant Care :

Monitor and manage post-transplantcomplications, including infections, bleeding, and organdysfunction. Administer medications to manage pain, nausea,infections, and other symptoms that may arise following transplant.

Monitor for early signs of acute or chronic graft-versus-hostdisease (GVHD) and collaborate with the healthcare team for earlyintervention. Provide care for patients in the neutropenic phase,using strict infection control precautions to minimize the risk ofinfection.

Patient Education :

Educate patients and their familiesabout the transplant process, including the procedure itself,potential complications, recovery timeline, and post-transplantcare. Teach patients how to recognize signs of infection, GVHD, andother complications, and instruct them on when to seek medicalhelp. Provide guidance on managing medications, side effects, andsymptoms such as pain and fatigue. Educate patients about theimportance of nutritional support, fluid balance, and emotionalwell-being during the transplant process.

Collaboration and CareCoordination :

Collaborate closely with hematologists, oncologists,transplant surgeons, social workers, dietitians, and otherhealthcare professionals to develop and implement individualizedcare plans. Coordinate care with the transplant team, ensuringtimely administration of chemotherapy, stem cell infusions, andfollow-up evaluations. Assist in the development of dischargeplans, including follow-up care, outpatient appointments, andpost-discharge instructions.

Psychosocial Support :

Provideemotional support to patients and families, addressing concernsrelated to the transplant process, side effects, prognosis, andlong-term recovery. Offer support during difficult decision-makingmoments, including discussions of treatment options, advanceddirectives, and palliative care if needed. Connect patients withsupport groups, counselors, and other resources to help them copewith the emotional impact of the transplant journey.

InfectionControl and Safety :

Follow strict infection control procedures,including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), isolationprecautions, and aseptic techniques. Monitor for signs of infectionand initiate appropriate interventions, including blood culturesand broad-spectrum antibiotics, as per physician orders. Ensurethat the patient’s environment is safe and conducive to healing,including minimizing exposure to sources of infection during therecovery period.

Documentation and Reporting :

Maintain accurateand up-to-date documentation of patient assessments, treatments,medications, and progress in the medical record. Report any adverseevents, side effects, or complications to the physician and otherrelevant members of the healthcare team. Ensure all documentationcomplies with legal and regulatory standards for bone marrowtransplant care.

Professional Development and Quality Improvement :

Participate in continuing education programs to stay updated on thelatest advances in hematology, oncology, and bone marrow transplantcare. Engage in clinical research and quality improvementinitiatives aimed at improving patient outcomes and transplantprocedures.
