Job Summary:

Provides quality patient care to critically ill and/or injured patients in the transport environment via helicopter, fixed-wing, and ground environment. Collaborates and coordinates patient care with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare providers both internally and externally. Participates in quality improvement initiatives, identifies and completes continuing education, and trains others. Provides essential services in ensuring the safe on-ground and in-flight transfer of acutely ill patients from one health care facility to another or from the scene to accepting facility. Provides Interfacility transport of sick adults, infants, and children and there is an added responsibility of being a community liaison between Wellstar Hospital System and referral hospitals.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

Helps coordinate the mode of transportation, communicate with referral and receiving facilities clearly and concisely, quickly assess and stabilize critically ill patients, as well as continuously monitor these patients in a transporting vehicle to assure they remain stable. Should the patient status change, the team must be able to determine the best treatment at that time as well as if the team must stop on the side of the road, land in a field, or divert to another facility to adequately provide care.

Patient Care:

Demonstrates proficiency in the practice of emergent and critical care paramedic practice under little or no supervision. The Flight Paramedic must be adept at monitoring, examining, and evaluating the condition of critical patients who require transport to and from AU Health from outlying hospitals or scenes. For transport, this includes providing appropriate stabilization and treatment that allows rapid yet safe transport via ambulance, helicopter, or fixed-wing aircraft. Assists with care plans and takes appropriate actions to promote patients short/long-term outcomes and well-being. Flight Nurse Patient Advocacy and Satisfaction:

Communicates necessary patient information to family, physicians, and staff. Embraces the concept of patient/family-centered care to maintain patient, family, physician, and referring facility satisfaction. Prioritizes actions according to patient needs and provides input into the plan of care by reporting pertinent information involving patient/family to the appropriate individuals in accordance with confidentiality standards. Respects the role of patients and their family members as integral members of the health care team and therefore encourages and supports the families in all aspects of planning, delivery, and evaluation of their health care.

Coordination of Care:

Prioritizes and coordinates optimum patient flow and patient experience. Delivers safe and effective care according to policies and protocols and maintains proper documentation of care and services, as well as change(s) in patient condition or accidents/incidents in compliance with standards of care and program/hospital policies and protocols. Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills to plan and implement patient care while working with multi-disciplinary services and other health care providers.

Continuous Professional Development:

Maintains professional certifications, self-identifies, and self-manages training opportunities. Participates in quality management initiatives and actively seeks improvements. Continuously involved in professional organizations and outside professional development opportunities. Keeps up to date with research literature and industry best practices. Demonstrates professional growth and development in their field as well as in the emergency transport of patients. These include includes assessment, patient care, equipment care, critical thinking skills, troubleshooting, leadership, administration of medications, parenteral fluids and blood products, patient and family education, support of and communication with other members of the healthcare team, as well as maintenance of security and the environment.

Technology/Equipment:

This position must be able to use: Flight gear, emergency and safety gear, medical and transport equipment, pharmaceuticals, phone, fax, copier, printers, PC, laptop, mouse, keyboard, monitors, MS Office, internet, Outlook email. May use job-specific complex software tools and mobile computing devices. Performs other duties as assigned Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.

Required Minimum Education:

Associates Nursing or Bachelors Nursing or Masters Nursing-Preferred Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s): All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated. RN-Compact or RN

  • Reg Nurse (Single State) BLS-I
  • Basic Life Support
  • Instructor or BLS
  • Basic Life Support ACLS
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support PALS
  • Pediatric Adv Life Support NRP
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Prvdr within 180 Days ATCN
  • Adv Trauma Care for Nurses Cer TNCC
  • Trauma Nurse Core Course CFRN
  • Cert Flight RN within 1-1/2 Yrs Additional License(s) and Certification(s):
TCRN,CEN,CCRN,CPEN, or C-NPT Preferred Required Minimum Experience:

Minimum 3 years nursing experience in ED and/or ICU. Required and Minimum 3 years 3-5 years of critical care transport/flight experience with at least 18 months of recent flight experience Preferred and Minimum 1 year Pre-hospital or transport experience.
