Job Summary:

The RN Resident is expected tosuccessfully complete the 12-month Nurse Residency Program (NRP).The Wellstar program is designed to facilitate and provide supportfor a successful transition into professional practice for the newgraduate RN with less than 6 months of experience as a ProfessionalRegistered Nurse.

RN Residents will participate in programs designedby 1) specialty/service line and 2) NRP sessions to support theirdevelopment. The RN Resident will be supported by the Unit-BasedLeaders, Educators, NRP RN educators, Site Coordinators, andUnit-Based Preceptors trained to support professional roletransition, strengthen nursing practice comprehension, criticalthinking, and clinical skills in preparation for providingexcellent patient care on the unit. The Nurse Resident’sorientation is comprised of the following sequential phases: SystemOrientation, Core Nursing Onboarding Sessions, Specialty OnboardingSessions, and monthly NRP sessions.

The RN Resident, under thedirect supervision of the Unit Manager and in collaboration withthe Professional Nurse Educator, Assistant Nurse Manager, andhis/her Preceptor, is responsible for the provision of nursing careto assigned patients in accordance with current Wellstar Standardsof Care.

The RN Resident is a proactive member of aninterprofessional team of licensed and unlicensed care givers whoensure that patients receive individualized, high quality, safepatient care. Families and significant others are viewed as engagedcare team partners supporting the patient across the continuum ofcare. The framework for practice is guided by the WellstarProfessional Practice Model, Patient Care Delivery Model,evidence-based practice, and research. RN competencies are derivedfrom these models and supported by the Wellstar Values in Action.

Itis expected that all RN Residents are licensed, knowledgeable anduphold the practice of nursing as outlined by the GeorgiaProfessional Nurse Practice Act and implements the Nursing Scopeand Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics Standards forNurses put forth by the American Nurses Association. As a member ofthe patient services team, it is expected that the individualupholds the voice of the patient, system policies and procedureswhile supporting service excellence goals. Additionally, it isexpected that RN Resident successfully complete the 12-month RNResidency in the unit in which they are hired.

Exemplary Practice and OutcomesPerforms theNursing Process (assessment; diagnosis; identification of outcomes;planning; implementation and evaluation) in the performance ofclinical care using evidence base practice, usesanalytical/critical thinking and ensuring that care isindividualized; coordinating care through effective partnershipsrecognizing that caring is central to achieve optimal patient careoutcomes.

Provides patient and family centered care that isconsistent with population specific characteristics (e.g. age,gender, disease, etc.) in a manner that adapts service delivery toreflect an understanding of cultural diversity Always partners withthe patient and significant others (as appropriate) using suchappropriate method for setting and purpose (e.g., bedside shiftreport; interdisciplinary rounds; just in time and planned patientteaching; keeping the patient and significant others updated andmaking the patients goals the focus of the plan of care.

Practicesusing current clinical practice standards.

Teamwork andCollaborationCoordinates the delivery and documentation of safequality patient care that promotes the professional care deliverymodel. This includes, but is not limited to diverse and inclusiveinterdisciplinary communication methods (interdisciplinary rounds,case review, etc.); completion of timely documentation andpromotion of a respectful, inclusive clinicalenvironmentDemonstrates teamwork and collaboration by practicing ina manner that is fiscally responsible and promotes the recruitmentand retention of all healthcare team members.

Participates andsupports performance improvement inclusive of all stakeholders,research and research utilization to promote safe, quality patientcare including initiating and/or leading such activities as wellas, promoting an inter/intra-disciplinary process and activelysupports/participates in shared governance at all levels in thesystem.

Professional Development and InitiativeCompletes all initialand ongoing professional competency assessment, required mandatoryeducation, population specific education.

Serves as a preceptorand/or or mentor for other professional nurses (and staff orstudents for all disciplines) to ensure that there is a current andfuture qualified workforce; modeling the professional practice ofnursing and creating a healthy work environmentEvidence BasedPractice and ResearchPromotes evidence-based practice, nursingresearch and performance improvement in nursing. Participates inactivities such as value analysis as part of the decision-makingprocess in evaluating patient care products.

Upholds all health caresystem/organizational policies and procedures and clinicalcompetencies put forth by this job description and professionalassociation including legal, regulatory and accreditationrequirements and standards ensuring by way of example, such goalsas TJC Patient Safety Goals and Wellstar Health Systems safetyabsolutesParticipates in data collection, poses relevant clinicalquestions to advanced evidence-based practice. Consults appropriateexperts and uses appropriate resources and evidence to addresspractice questions.

Resources and SupportProactively plans for thecare of patients across the care continuum in the course ofgivingdirect patient care.

Participates in the development of protocolsand procedures when called upon or through self-initiation incollaboration with care managers and other members of the healthcare team to achieve best practice outcomes (i.e., decrease inre-admission rates; avoidable days; adverse events; etc.).Supportsefficient and effective use of human and material resourcesPerformsother duties as assignedComplies with all WellStar Health Systempolicies, standards of work, and code of conduct.

Required MinimumEducation:

Graduate of an accredited/approved school ofnursingRequiredRequired Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):

Allcertifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated. Basic Life Support or BLS – Instructor Reg Nurse (Single State) or RN – Multi-state CompactAdditionalLicense(s) and Certification(s):

Required Minimum Experience:

Lessthan 1 year or less of RN experience

RequiredRequired MinimumSkills:

Ability to read, write and speak English language, optimizethe use of technology to support clinical care and holds basiccomputer skills; Strong interpersonal, collaborative skills alongwith customer service skills required; Ability to function in afast-paced environment and respond to emergencies in using adecisive, composed and respectful manner; Possess excellent timemanagement skills; practices nursing using evidence and analyticalskills along with possessing strong critical thinking skills;Ability to communicate with various members of the healthcareteamComputer/data entry experience. Ability to use Microsoft Excel,Word and have basic computer operational knowledge.
