At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) PRN position isa licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician, functions at theCompetent to Proficient stage of Benner’s model of clinicalpractice. The RN PRN position provides professional nursing care toa diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assistswith exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance ofmedical records.
The RN PRN position provides direct patient careeffectively and efficiently which may include patients with variedand complex needs. This position communicates and collaborates withthe physicians and interprofessional health care team tofacilitate, coordinate and maintain compassionate, efficient,quality care and achievement of desired treatment outcomes. The RNPRN position demonstrates clinical competence when providing care,using technology, administering medications, performing proceduresand managing emergencies, acting as a patient and family advocatein order to monitor and maintain patient rights. This positionassumes leadership roles with progressive responsibility includingbut not limited to participating in or leading unit and sharedgovernance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor tostudents or new employees, and possibly contributing to serviceline or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management.
PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Uses therapeutic communication, which includes active listeningand teaching, to establish a relationship with patients, familiesand interprofessional health care team to collaborate on the planof care. Contributes to teamwork by awareness of overall unit acuity,consistently offering assistance, and responding positively torequests for assistance. Collaborates to foster healthyrelationships in the work environment. Seeks guidance from andoffers guidance to interprofessional health care team, whenappropriate, and applies feedback to improve patient outcomes. Implements staff education specific to patient populations andunit processes; coaches and mentors other staff and students. Mayinclude preceptorship. Uses peer-to-peer accountability towardsimprovement of department score for turnover/retention/employeeengagement on unit-based scorecard.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Follows the patient and family-centered care standards, asoutlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practicedocument. Conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams andtreatment, and maintenance of medical records. Develops, updates and communicates plan of care, includingdischarge, in partnership with the patient, family andinterprofessional health care team, using the nursing process.
Prioritizes care based on the patient’s needs, abilities andpreferences. Advocates on patient/family’s behalf to identify andresolve clinical and ethical concerns, utilizing appropriateresources. Provides patient teaching based on learning needs, usesappropriate resources, incorporating planning for care afterdischarge. Consistently evaluates the patient’s comprehension andadapts teaching methods accordingly. Helps drive improvement of department score for patientsatisfaction on unit-based scorecard, through peer-to-peeraccountability to service standards.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Follows the standards of care related to the nursing process,as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practicedocument. Follows the standards related to regulatory requirements andprofessional practice as outlined in the Houston MethodistProfessional Nursing Practice document. Identifies areas ofpractice improvements with research-based evidence to achieve coremeasure and patient safety outcomes, supported by accuratedocumentation. Provides and modifies care to complex patients and coordinatescare with the interprofessional team based on evaluation of thepatient’s condition, supported by accurate documentation. Utilizesclinical judgement, using an evidence-based analytical approach. Improves quality and safety scores on the unit-based scorecard,through peer-to-peer accountability, reporting near misses, andcollaborating with the interprofessional health care team.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Displays self-motivation to independently manage timeeffectively, timely document care, minimize incidental overtime,and prioritize daily tasks. Provides input into the unit resourceutilization including unit capital and operational budget needs. Contributes towards meeting department financial targets onunit-based scorecard through decreasing length of stay, optimizingefficiency and other areas according to departmentspecifications.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Identifies and presents areas for innovation, efficiency andimprovement in patient care or unit operations using evidence-basedpractice literature. Offers innovative solutions throughevidence-based practice/performance improvement projects and sharedgovernance activities. Champions new care pathways or service line implementation toimprove service to the community. Identifies trends for improvementopportunities or practice changes and supports initiatives.
Researches the change and presents options to shared governance andleadership. EDUCATION
Bachelor of Science degree or higher from an accredited Schoolof Nursing
WORK EXPERIENCE
Two years of registered nurse experience in a healthcareenvironment
