Pay Information$3,204 per week About The Position A Registered Nurse (RN) inElectrophysiology (EP) provides specialized nursing care topatients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures relatedto heart rhythm disorders. EP nurses work in collaboration withelectrophysiologists and other healthcare professionals to assistin the management of arrhythmias, conduct diagnostic tests such aselectrophysiology studies (EPS), and support patients throughprocedures like catheter ablation, pacemaker or defibrillatorimplantation, and other treatments. This role requires expertknowledge of cardiac care, advanced electrophysiology techniques,and the ability to work in high-stakes, fast-paced environments.

Key Responsibilities :
Pre-Procedure Assessment and Preparation :

Conduct thorough pre-procedure assessments of patients, includingreviewing medical history, current medications, allergies, andprevious cardiac conditions. Educate patients and their familiesabout the electrophysiology procedure, including the purpose,potential risks, and expected outcomes. Ensure patients areappropriately prepared for the procedure, including obtaininginformed consent, performing vital sign checks, and ensuring labwork is completed (e.g., EKG, blood work). Monitor patient statusprior to the procedure, including sedation levels, anxietymanagement, and any comorbid conditions (e.g., hypertension,diabetes). Assisting in

Electrophysiology Procedures :

Assist theelectrophysiologist during electrophysiology studies (EPS), whichinvolve mapping the electrical pathways of the heart. Set up andmonitor electrophysiology equipment, including theelectrophysiology lab’s electrical mapping system, fluoroscopy, andother diagnostic tools. Assist with the insertion of catheters intothe heart via the femoral vein, internal jugular vein, or otheraccess points, ensuring patient safety and comfort. Monitor thepatient’s vital signs, oxygenation levels, and electrocardiogram(ECG) during the procedure. Administer sedatives, analgesics, orother medications as ordered, ensuring patient safety and managingpotential side effects or complications. Assist with catheterablation procedures to treat arrhythmias, including monitoring forany adverse events during the procedure.

Post-Procedure Care andMonitoring :

Monitor patients closely after an EP procedure,including assessing vital signs, cardiac rhythms, and any signs ofcomplications (e.g., bleeding, infection, arrhythmia recurrence).Provide care for patients recovering from sedation, ensuring theyare stable and alert before discharge. Educate patients onpost-procedure care, including wound care (for catheter insertionsites), activity restrictions, medication management, andrecognizing signs of potential complications (e.g., infection,bleeding). Coordinate with the healthcare team to ensure follow-upappointments and ongoing care, such as pacemaker or defibrillatorprogramming or cardiac rehabilitation.

Patient Education andEmotional Support :

Provide education to patients and familiesregarding arrhythmias, pacemaker/defibrillator use, and lifestylechanges needed to manage their heart condition. Address patients’concerns and provide emotional support before, during, and afterthe procedure, helping to alleviate anxiety and ensuring they arefully informed. Educate patients about heart health, including therole of medication, activity restrictions, and long-term carefollowing heart rhythm treatments. Collaboration with the

Healthcare Team :

Work closely with electrophysiologists,cardiologists, and other medical professionals to ensure thatpatients receive optimal care during and after the procedure.

Communicate effectively with the healthcare team, providing updateson patient status and any changes in condition during or after theprocedure. Collaborate in the development of individualized careplans for patients with arrhythmias, ensuring appropriatetreatments are delivered. Participate in patient rounds to reviewand update care plans as necessary.

Infection Control and Safety :

Follow strict infection control protocols during procedures,including sterile techniques when inserting catheters andperforming other invasive procedures. Monitor for and address anysigns of infection at catheter insertion sites or internal devicesites (e.g., pacemaker or defibrillator). Ensure patient safety bymonitoring for potential complications, such as bleeding orarrhythmias, following procedures.

Documentation and Record-Keeping:

Maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation of patientassessments, procedures, medications administered, and outcomes.

Ensure patient records are in compliance with institutional andregulatory standards, including HIPAA guidelines. Document anypost-procedure complications, patient responses to treatment, andcare instructions provided to patients.

Emergency Response :

Respond to emergency situations, such as cardiac arrhythmias,complications from the procedure (e.g., catheter-induced trauma),or adverse reactions to medications or anesthesia. Be prepared toinitiate life-saving measures such as advanced cardiac life support(ACLS) in the event of a cardiac arrest or other life-threateningconditions.
