Under the direct supervision of the designated HeadNurse, demonstrates proficiency in administering the fundamentalsof the nursing process, contributes to the nursing assessment andthe development of the nursing care plan, and participates in theevaluation of nursing care. Shares responsibility for individualpatients or an entire patient population. Organizational Expectations Provides a positive and professional representation of theorganization. Promotes culture of safety for patients and employees throughproper identification, reporting, documentation, andprevention. Maintains hospital standards for a clean and quiet patientenvironment to maintain a positive patient care experience. Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards ofpractice, trends, and developments in related scope of job role orpractice. Adheres to infection-control policies and protocols, medicationadministration and storage procedures, and controlled substanceregulations. Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities. Maintains compliance with organization’s policies, as well asestablished practices, protocols, and procedures of the position,department, and applicable professional standards. Complies with organizational and regulatory policies for handlingconfidential patient information. Essential Functions Patient assessment:

Obtains and documents nursing history from the patient and/orsignificant other that is comprehensive of present condition andprior problems. Performs basic assessment of the patient, indicating adequateknowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology. Records vital signs, notes changes, and pursues more-specificinvestigation as needed. Makes pertinent observation, using language that correctlydescribes body parts and functions, and draws logical conclusionswhich direct formation of nursing care plan. Identifies abnormal diagnostic data and shows a fundamentalunderstanding of its implications by reporting information to thephysician and others caring for the patient, and by incorporatinginformation in the nursing care plan.

Nursing care plan:

Uses assessment information to develop a care plan before the endof duty time that communicates enough information for incomingpersonnel to adequately care for the patient. Reviews and develops care plans for assigned patients. Includes the patient and his or her family in planning care,establishing priorities, and setting goals.

Plan implementation:

Uses care plans as a basis for providing safe and therapeutic careto patients. Consistently follows established standards, policies, andprocedures in providing nursing care. Accepts accountability for clinical care of assigned patients,including supervision of nonprofessional personnel. Communicates with the patient and his or her family and othermembers of the health care team in carrying out the goals of thecare plan. Indicates an understanding of the roles of other health-care teammembers in patient care and incorporates their input into the careplan. Performs competently those technical skills considered basic to thetype of care given on that unit. Identifies patient teaching needs and provides elementaryinstructions for the patient and his or her family. Notes discharge planning elements and incorporates these in careplans, demonstrating an awareness of community care available afterdischarge. Responds appropriately in urgent and/or emergency situations.

Evaluation:

Evaluates and notes the individual patient’s response to nursingcare defined in the nursing care plan and medical records. Participates in the evaluation of nursing care given to groups ofpatients. Identifies strengths and weaknesses of nursing care systems.

Leadership:

Supports standards of nursing care through adherence to existingpolicies and procedures. Supervises care given by nonprofessional personnel, providinginstruction as needed. Regularly attends unit conferences and makes recommendations forimprovement in patient care via the patient care conference andunit conference. Participates in peer review as appropriate to the unit andDepartment of Nursing.

Education:

Assumes responsibility for professional growth by current readingand attendance at educational programs and unit conference. Assists in teaching individual patients and patients in groups inestablished programs. Seeks guidance when encountering nursing procedures andresponsibilities that have not been mastered. Acquires minimum of ten (10) hours of continuing education per yearin nursing practice.

Qualifications:

Job Requirements Minimum Education Graduate of an accredited nursing program. Minimum Education Bachelor’s degree (BSN) preferred. Minimum Work Experience Minimum of six (6) months’ recent experience as a professionalnurse. Required Skills Demonstrated proficiency of 50 percent of the skills required forLevel II. Required Licenses Registered Nurse Must possess an active RN license in the state of TN or hold acompact State RN license with the intent to obtain a TN RN licensewithin 30 days of hire.

Required Skills Certifications:

Basic Life Support (BLS) current or must obtain within 90 days ofhire. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) current or must obtainwithin 90 days of hire. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) current or must obtainwithin 90 days of hire.
