Employees are charged with the responsibility of furthering STF’s mission by exhibiting the core values that are at its heart: Teamwork, Respect, Compassion, Integrity, and Safety. Specialized Treatment Facility employs milieu therapy as the foundation for the treatment of its residents. Milieu therapy is a planned treatment environment in which everyday events and interactions are therapeutically designed for the purpose of enhancing social skills and building confidence. This therapy uses common structures familiar to all children, such as daily routines, consistent rules and activities. The Nurses provide leadership and direction to the staff they work with on the Pods. The Nurses are immediately supervised by the Director of Nursing (DON). About the Position Nurse III is a seasoned professional Registered Nurse accountable for serving as a member of the Nursing Department. Nurses in this position will provide primary nursing care for adolescents residing at a Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) under the supervision of the DON. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assess individuals for signs/symptoms of illness, medication administration, medical care, and clinical supervision for staff members. Nurse III is responsible for mentoring or directing the work of lower level employees in Nursing and Resident Living. Responsibilities and Duties Nurses administer medication and medical treatments following standard nursing procedures. They assess and monitor physical conditions of residents. Nurses assess staff after work related injuries for completion of a Work Comp packet, administer COVID tests, TB tests, vaccinations, and all other resident and staff related needs consistent with policies, procedures and regulations. Nurses maintains effective communication with patients, families, and members of the treatment team. They provide documentation, prepare reports, and maintain resident and staff records concerning health related data. Nurses participate in defining, interpreting, and implementing standards, policies, and procedures which affect the delivery of nursing care services. Nurses participates in regular in-service training and continuing education. Nurses need to be able to demonstrate the ability to: take vital signs and interpret their relevance to the physical safety of an resident in seclusion or restraint; recognize nutritional needs; check circulation and range of motion in extremities; address hygiene and elimination issues; competency in following policies and procedures when performing phlebotomy procedures; address physical and psychological status and comfort; recognize when to contact a medically trained physician or EMS to evaluate and/or treat the individual’s physical status. Nurses need to be able to demonstrate: competency in assisting individual in meeting the behavior criteria for starting and discontinuation of seclusion and restraint; competency by exercising accuracy and safety in the administration and documentation of medications; operation of equipment; competency in the operation of CBG monitor; competency in the operation of an AED; competency in the operation of electronic blood pressure equipment; competency in the operation of a nebulizer; competency in the operation of an oxygen concentrator. Nurses must maintain certifications in MANDT, CPR and first aid, as well as maintain a valid driver license and liability insurance to be a driver of a state vehicle. All STF employees are responsible for reading, understanding, and adhering to all policies, protocols, and memorandums. Universal Precautions and Infection Control policies must be adhered by all STF employees. Universal precautions were designed for doctors, nurses, patients, and healthcare workers who came into contact with patients and their bodily fluids. All healthcare workers are responsible for all aspects of care for the residents served at STF. Residential staff and Nurses must abide by standard precautions which applies to the care of all patients, irrespective of their disease state. These precautions apply when there is a risk of potential exposure to (1) blood; (2) all body fluids, secretions, and excretions, except sweat, regardless of whether or not they contain visible blood; (3) non-intact skin, and (4) mucous membranes. This includes hand hygiene and personal protective equipment (PPE), with hand hygiene being the single most important means to prevent transmission of disease. Personal protective equipment serves as a barrier to protect the skin, mucous membranes, airway, and clothing. It includes gowns, gloves, masks, and face shields or goggles.
