A successful Exam Room Nurse candidate will have multiple prerequisite skills and qualifications needed for the performance of their duties. Some necessary skills and qualifications include: Working knowledge of the pharmaceuticals that are prescribed by the Veterinarian Good listening skills Compassion Medical notation Discharge instructions Client education Attention to detail Must be computer proficient Able to work without supervision Good time management skills to ensure assigned responsibilities are completed in an efficient manner Good communication skills; able to effectively communicate with management, staff, doctors, and clients Grasps concepts quickly and have good follow through skills, adheres to work schedule and follows through on challenges as they arise, and maintains a positive outlook Excellent written and verbal presentation skills Excellent self-motivation skills, maintain a feeling of pride in work, has a strong work ethic and strives to achieve all goals Physical stamina Knowledge of a variety of animal species An Exam Room Nurse should have experience working in a variety of settings that focus on the care of animals. Experience working as a volunteer in animal shelters is also beneficial. A Exam Room Nurse with more experience has handled multiple animal species, understands animal behavior and the handling of animals in all temperaments and can communicate medical information to clients, Veterinarians and coworkers. They work closely with Technicians, Veterinarians and the Front Desk Staff to oversee pet checkups , or more in-depth medical care, update patient records, medical notations, and offers extensive pet owner education. On a typical day, the Exam Room Nurse starts by reviewing their appointment schedule for the day. Before each appointment, they communicate with the patients’ owner, review their patients’ medical histories to familiarize themselves with a patient’s previous health conditions or medications. Once they finish their tasks, they call in the Veterinarian to complete more in-depth assessments. Pay rate may depend on a candidate’s experience level.
