Summary:
The PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit) RegisteredNurse provides specialized care to patients recovering fromanesthesia and surgery. This role involves assessing patientrecovery, implementing post-operative care plans, administeringtreatments, collaborating with the surgical team, and coordinatingcare for discharging or transporting patients. The PACU RN ensurespatient safety and comfort during the critical recovery period,using advanced clinical skills, effective communication, andadherence to professional and regulatory standards.
Essential WorkFunctions:
Receive and conduct comprehensive assessments of patientstransferring from the operating room and assess theirpost-anesthesia condition Monitors and evaluates patient’s vital signs, level ofconsciousness, and recovery from anesthesia Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordancewith approved post-anesthesia nursing techniques Monitor and evaluate patient vital signs, level ofconsciousness, and response to anesthesia Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of recoveringpatients Observes and document patient conditions, treatments, andsignificant incidents and responds to anesthesia and treatments,notifying the care team of significant changes or adversereactions Respond promptly to emergency situations utilizing PACU nursingstandards, policies, procedures, and protocols Accurately document patient assessments, interventions, andrecovery progress in the medical records Develop and deliver individualized patient and family educationplans, including detailed discharge instructions and recoveryguidelines Collaborates with the surgical team and other healthcareproviders to ensure comprehensive post-operative care Participate in patient handoff communications to ensurecontinuity of care between OR, PACU, and post-PACU units Operate and monitor PACU-specific equipment, such asventilators, monitors, and infusion pumps Perform other duties as assigned within the scope ofpractice
Required Essential Skills:
Critical thinking, service excellence and good interpersonalcommunication skills The ability to read, write, & communicate in the Englishlanguage is required Ability to read/comprehend written instructions, follow verbalinstructions, and proficiency in PC skills Physical Abilities
