The Respiratory TherapistI is a health care professional who is a graduate of a Program inRespiratory Care approved by the Committee on Accreditation forRespiratory Care (CoARC) and is licensed by the State ofConnecticut as a Respiratory Care Practitioner. The Therapist Iperforms a variety of clinical activities in the assessment,treatment and education of the patient with respiratory problems.

The Therapist I actively supports and serves as a resource to theother members of the patient care team. The Therapist I supportsdepartmental and interdepartmental quality improvement efforts.

Clinical Applicationof Respiratory Care:

Functions efficiently, resourcefully andskillfully in providing patients optimum age-specific respiratorycare. 1.1 Assesses patient’s pulmonary status employing basicskills, which include reviewing the medical chart, patientinterview, physical examination, and interpretation of blood gases.

Demonstrates proficiency and consistency with all assessmentskills, including interpretation of x-ray and blood gases, RAW, CLgraphic displays, etc. Demonstrates knowledge and interpretation ofdiagnostic procedures such as PPD, overnight oximetry, peak flow,arterial puncture, and sputum induction. 2.

Documentation andWritten communication:

Contributes to effective communicationwithin the department through documentation of servicesadministered, changes in patient?s clinical status, and therapeuticobjectives. 2.1 Records all care provided via electronic medicalrecord accurately. Identifies patient on written documents by usingMRN and patient labels as required by department and hospitalpolicy. Notes consistently include ABGs, patient assessment,weaning assessment, and parameters. Maintains patientconfidentiality with documentation practices. 3.

Consultation andCollaboration and Oral Communication:

Communicates clearly andappropriately with co-workers. Demonstrates a cooperative teamspirit, effectively contributing to excellence of patient care. 3.1Patient report information is appropriate and conveys currentpatient status. Gives report using SBAR format and attentively,courteously accepts report in order to facilitate transition fromone shift to the next. Accurately, completely, and concisely givesa safe hand off for all relevant clinical information on patient’sclinical course and status. 4. Self-Development, Professionalismand Leadership – Assumes responsibility for maintaining clinicalcompetency through continuing education, professional growth, anddevelopment. 4.1 Assumes responsibility for professionalself-development. Keeps self-informed about current trends withinthe profession and new procedures/equipment in the department.

Requests inservices as appropriate to maintain competencies forequipment and procedures. Maintains membership in AARC, NBRC ordemonstrates other active participation in profession.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Graduation from an accredited program ofRespiratory Care, current active license by the State ofConnecticut as a Respiratory Care Practitioner. NBRC Certificationas demonstrated by completion of the TMC examination or itspredecessor, Bachelor of Science Degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Thisis an entry level position for new grads, those with limitedexperience in critical care or neonatal environments and those whohave not yet completed the

NBRC RRT

exam.

LICENSURE CT RCP

LicenseBLS Advanced LS ‘ related to patient population as assigned(preferred)

SPECIAL SKILLS

Competent in the basic operation andapplication of respiratory care equipment. Excellent oral andwritten communication. Excellent organizational skills. Ability towork under stressful conditions. Excellent interpersonal skills.
