Travel The Registered Nurse (RN) inthe Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) provides specializednursing care to patients undergoing cardiovascular surgeries. TheRN works closely with the surgical team, including cardiothoracicsurgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical technologists, and otherhealthcare professionals, to ensure safe, effective, andcompassionate care before, during, and after cardiac procedures.
This role requires expertise in cardiovascular anatomy, surgicalinterventions, and high-acuity care in the operating room setting.
Key Responsibilities:

Preoperative Patient Preparation:
- Assesspatients prior to surgery by reviewing medical histories,allergies, and current medications.
- Prepare patients physicallyand emotionally for surgery, explaining procedures and answeringquestions.
- Ensure all preoperative orders are completed,including labs, imaging, and medications, as prescribed by thesurgical team.
- Verify patient identity, surgical site, andprocedure using a surgical checklist to ensure patient safety.
- Assist with positioning patients on the operating table to ensureoptimal access and comfort during the procedure.

IntraoperativeNursing Care:
- Assist with the setup of the sterile field andensure all surgical instruments and equipment are ready for use.
- Monitor the patient’s vital signs, including heart rate, bloodpressure, oxygen levels, and blood gases during surgery.
- Administer medications (e.g., anesthetics, analgesics) and fluidsas directed by the anesthesiologist or surgeon.
- Assist thesurgical team during complex cardiovascular procedures, such ascoronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve repair/replacement,or other heart surgeries.
- Ensure the maintenance of a sterileenvironment, adhering to infection control practices and usingsterile techniques during the procedure.
- Respond promptly to anychanges in the patient’s condition, including complications such asarrhythmias or bleeding.

Monitoring and Documentation:
- Documentpatient status, interventions, and changes in condition in theelectronic health record (EHR) according to hospital policies.
- Record intraoperative events, including medications, bloodproducts, and surgical team interventions.
- Monitor and documentpatient responses to anesthesia, medications, and surgicalinterventions, and report any concerns to the surgical team.

Postoperative Care:
- Assist with the transfer of the patient fromthe operating room to the recovery unit or intensive care unit(ICU), ensuring stable vitals and ongoing monitoring.
- Monitor thepatient for signs of complications post-surgery, such as bleeding,infection, or arrhythmias, and take immediate action if needed.
- Provide postoperative education to patients and families, includinginformation on recovery, wound care, and activity restrictions.
- Administer pain management and other medications as prescribed topromote comfort and recovery.

Collaboration and Communication:
- Communicate effectively with the surgical team, including surgeons,anesthesiologists, and surgical technologists, to ensurecoordinated care.
- Collaborate with the preoperative andpostoperative care teams to ensure continuity of care and addressany patient concerns.
- Participate in surgical briefings anddebriefings to discuss patient care, procedure outcomes, and anyimprovements needed for future surgeries.

Emergency Response andCrisis Management:
- Be prepared to manage critical situations,such as life-threatening arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, or excessivebleeding, during surgery.
- Use advanced cardiovascular lifesupport (ACLS) protocols and other emergency measures to stabilizepatients when needed.
- Work collaboratively with the surgical andanesthesia teams to handle unexpected complications quickly andefficiently.

Sterilization and Equipment Maintenance:
- Ensureall cardiovascular surgical instruments and equipment aresterilized, functioning, and properly maintained.
- Troubleshootand resolve equipment malfunctions quickly to minimize delays insurgery.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies and industrystandards for infection control, including maintaining steriletechnique and using proper PPE.

Patient Advocacy and Support:
- Advocate for patient safety and comfort before, during, and aftersurgery, ensuring the patient’s well-being is the top priority.
- Provide emotional support to patients and families, answeringquestions and offering reassurance about the surgery process andexpected outcomes.

Professional Development:
- Stay current withthe latest research, techniques, and best practices incardiovascular nursing and surgery.
- Participate in continuingeducation opportunities, including certifications and trainingspecific to cardiovascular care (e.g., CNOR, CCRN, or CardiacSurgery Nurse certification).
- Collaborate with colleagues toenhance the CVOR department’s practices and improve patientoutcomes.
