TheOperating Room (OR) Nurse, also known as a Perioperative Nurse, isresponsible for providing direct nursing care to patientsundergoing surgery. The OR Nurse works as part of amultidisciplinary team in the operating room, ensuring that thesurgical environment is safe, sterile, and efficient. They assistwith preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care, workingclosely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcareprofessionals to deliver high-quality care.n

KeyResponsibilities:

Preoperative Care:

n n Assess patients’ medical histories, perform physicalassessments, and ensure that necessary tests are completed beforesurgery.n Review the surgical procedure and verify patient identity,surgical site, and other critical information to preventerrors.n Educate patients and their families about the surgicalprocedure, potential risks, and postoperative careinstructions.n Prepare and assess surgical instruments and equipment to ensureeverything is sterile and ready for the surgery.n Administer preoperative medications as ordered, includingantibiotics or sedatives.nnn n

Intraoperative Care:

n n Assist the surgical team by providing sterile instruments,supplies, and equipment during the procedure.n Monitor the patient’s vital signs, including heart rate, bloodpressure, oxygen levels, and temperature throughout thesurgery.n Ensure the operating room maintains a sterile field and thatall instruments are properly handled to prevent infection.n Document all aspects of the surgery, including medicationsgiven, time of procedures, and any complications or changes duringsurgery.n Assist with positioning the patient on the operating table toensure comfort and proper access to the surgical site.nnn n

Postoperative Care:

n n Monitor patients as they recover from anesthesia, assessingvital signs, and ensuring that they are stable before transfer tothe recovery room or another care unit.n Provide postoperative education to patients and their families,including instructions on wound care, activity restrictions, andsigns of complications.n Assist with the management of postoperative pain, administeringmedications as prescribed.n Communicate with the surgical team about any concerns orcomplications during the recovery phase.n Ensure that patients’ post-anesthesia care is documentedthoroughly.nnn n

Collaboration and Communication:

n n Work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgicaltechnologists, and other nursing staff to provide seamless andeffective care.n Communicate clearly and effectively with patients, families,and the surgical team to ensure that everyone is informed about thepatient’s progress and needs.n Participate in patient hand-offs, ensuring that all relevantinformation is communicated during shift changes.nnn n

Infection Control and Safety:

n n Adhere to strict infection control practices, ensuring allequipment and surgical instruments are properly sterilized.n Follow proper safety protocols, including maintaining a sterilefield, handling sharps, and assisting with positioning andmonitoring during surgery.n Ensure that the operating room environment complies withhospital policies and regulatory standards to reduce the risk ofinfection or injury.nnn n

Emergency Response and Crisis Management:

n n Remain prepared for emergencies, such as patient complicationsduring surgery or unexpected changes in the patient’scondition.n Provide immediate care in the event of a medical emergency,such as resuscitation or hemorrhage control, and coordinate withthe surgical team for quick resolution.nnn n

Professional Development:

n n Keep current with best practices, new surgical techniques, andadvances in perioperative nursing care through continuingeducation.n Participate in workshops, conferences, and other trainingopportunities to maintain and enhance clinical skills.n Mentor and train new nurses or nursing students in theoperating room environment.nnnn

n n Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; AssociateDegree in Nursing (ADN) required.nnn

Licensure:
