options!) /n The Professional Staff Nurse is aRegistered Nurse and a member of the care delivery team. TheProfessional Staff Nurse is responsible to set the standards forthe level and quality of care. The Professional Staff Nurse hasresponsibility, authority and accountability for the provision ofnursing care. The Professional Staff Nurse manages and providespatient care activities for a group of patients and their familiesthrough the application of independent judgment, communication andcollaboration with all team members. The role of the ProfessionalStaff Nurse encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration andsupervision. The Professional Staff Nurse establishes and maintainscollaborative relationships with physicians, other health careproviders, patients and their families, to achieve desired patientoutcomes throughout the continuum of care. The Professional StaffNurse demonstrates a commitment to the community and to the nursingprofession.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintainsproductive working relationships internally and externally bydemonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivationand commitment to patients and colleagues.

  • Demonstratesknowledge of adult learning principles (and/or teaching children ifapplicable) and applies in teaching of patients, families, studentsand new staff.

Provides detailed and appropriate teaching topatients and families to effectively guide them through the episodeof care as well as transition to another level of care and/or home.

Supports the development of students, new staff and colleagues, mayserve as a preceptor. Creates an environment of open dialogue,inquiry and continuous development by asking for feedback andimproving practice. /n

  • Applies the nursing process within theframework of Relationship Based Care to create a healingenvironment.

Formulates daily goals and a plan of care for patientsthat involves the patient as partner and considers the individualneeds of the patient in a holistic manner. Demonstrates criticalthinking in the identification of clinical, social, safety,psychological and spiritual issues for the patient care within anepisode of care. Practices solid communication skills, and is ableto articulate and translate the patient’s condition to other careproviders and to negotiate and make recommendations for changes inpatient care and unit practices. Patient documentation iscomprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers.

Incorporates national professional organization as well as businessunit and health system’s goals to improve patient safety, qualityand satisfaction.

Creates a caring and compassionate patient focusedexperience by building healing relationships with patients,families and colleagues. /n

  • Demonstrates accountability forprofessional development that improves the quality of professionalpractice and the quality of patient care.

Actively participates inunit-based shared governance, goal setting and supports the changeand transition process to improve quality of care and the practiceenvironment. Serves as a highly engaged and full partner on thecare team and responds willingly to care team member needs forassistance and partnership. Participates in work that improvespatient care and the professional practice environment. Adapts tochange and demonstrates flexibility with the change process. /n

  • Actively participates in department or unit-specific qualityimprovement efforts.

Identifies opportunity for quality improvementto colleagues and management. Takes personal responsibility inimproving patient satisfaction with the quality of care andservice. Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to supportimprovement in clinical care: identifies research issues orarticles related to clinical specialty or areas of interest,discusses opportunities for quality improvement atmultidisciplinary rounds, and influences patients’ plans of care./n The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge andskills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately tothe ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit asspecified below. They must also demonstrate knowledge of theprinciples of growth and development over the life span and possessthe ability to assess data reflective of the patients status andinterpret the appropriate information needed to identify eachpatients requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and toprovide the care needs as described in the department policy andprocedures. Zero to two years of experience. BSN preferred. Abilityto establish and maintain positive, caring relationships withexecutives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers,ancillary and support staff, other departments, andpatients/families. Ability to work productively and effectivelywithin a complex environment, handle multiple/changing prioritiesand specialized equipment. Good clinical judgment with criticalthinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required asrelated to various aspects of patient care. Critical thinkingskills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application ofthe nursing process. Mobility and visual manual dexterity. Physicalstamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning ofpatients.

UPMC offers a variety of flexible options ? in addition totraditional rotating/flexible shifts, special programs exist towork primarily night shifts or weekend shifts with a premium paydifferential. Employees hired as or who choose to transition intoone of these programs at a later time must have at least 6 monthsof nursing experience to qualify and may be required to completeany necessary orientation during regular business hours. Licensure, Certifications, andClearances:

UPMC approved national certification preferred. Currentlicensure as a Registered Professional Nurse either in the statewhere the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensurecompact agreement with the state where the facility is located. CPRrequired based on AHA standards that include both a didactic andskills demonstration component within 30 days of hire. Graduatenurses must complete licensure examination within

SIX MONTHS

ofhire or within one year of graduation, whichever comes first.

Though temporary permits are valid for one year from the date ofgraduation, not one year from issue of permit (or until the resultsof the examination are known at which time it becomes null andvoid), UPMC requires that GNs take the licensure examination within6 months of their start date or they will be terminated or demotedfrom the GN position, at the discretion of the BU.

  • Current licensure eitherin the state where the facility is located or, if the facility isin a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact(NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLCstate.
