JobSummary:
The Operating Room (OR) Nurse, also known as aPerioperative Nurse, is responsible for providing direct nursingcare to patients undergoing surgery. The OR Nurse works as part ofa multidisciplinary team in the operating room, ensuring that thesurgical environment is safe, sterile, and efficient. They assistwith preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care, workingclosely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcareprofessionals to deliver high-quality care. /n
KeyResponsibilities:

Preoperative Care:
/n /n
- Assesspatients’ medical histories, perform physical assessments, andensure that necessary tests are completed before surgery. /n
- Review the surgical procedure and verify patient identity, surgicalsite, and other critical information to prevent errors. /n
- Educate patients and their families about the surgical procedure,potential risks, and postoperative care instructions. /n
- Prepareand assess surgical instruments and equipment to ensure everythingis sterile and ready for the surgery. /n
- Administer preoperativemedications as ordered, including antibiotics or sedatives.

Intraoperative Care:
/n /n
- Assist the surgical team byproviding sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment during theprocedure. /n
- Monitor the patient’s vital signs, including heartrate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and temperature throughout thesurgery. /n
- Ensure the operating room maintains a sterile fieldand that all instruments are properly handled to prevent infection./n
- Document all aspects of the surgery, including medicationsgiven, time of procedures, and any complications or changes duringsurgery. /n
- Assist with positioning the patient on the operatingtable to ensure comfort and proper access to the surgical site.

Postoperative Care:
/n /n
- Monitor patients as theyrecover from anesthesia, assessing vital signs, and ensuring thatthey are stable before transfer to the recovery room or anothercare unit. /n
- Provide postoperative education to patients andtheir families, including instructions on wound care, activityrestrictions, and signs of complications. /n
- Assist with themanagement of postoperative pain, administering medications asprescribed. /n
- Communicate with the surgical team about anyconcerns or complications during the recovery phase. /n
- Ensurethat patients’ post-anesthesia care is documented thoroughly.

Collaboration and Communication:
/n /n
- Work closely withsurgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical technologists, and othernursing staff to provide seamless and effective care. /n
- Communicate clearly and effectively with patients, families, andthe surgical team to ensure that everyone is informed about thepatient’s progress and needs. /n
- Participate in patienthand-offs, ensuring that all relevant information is communicatedduring shift changes.

Infection Control and Safety:
/n /n
- Adhere to strict infection control practices, ensuring allequipment and surgical instruments are properly sterilized. /n
- Follow proper safety protocols, including maintaining a sterilefield, handling sharps, and assisting with positioning andmonitoring during surgery. /n
- Ensure that the operating roomenvironment complies with hospital policies and regulatorystandards to reduce the risk of infection or injury.

Emergency Response and Crisis Management:
/n /n
- Remain preparedfor emergencies, such as patient complications during surgery orunexpected changes in the patient’s condition. /n
- Provideimmediate care in the event of a medical emergency, such asresuscitation or hemorrhage control, and coordinate with thesurgical team for quick resolution.

ProfessionalDevelopment:
/n /n
- Keep current with best practices, new surgicaltechniques, and advances in perioperative nursing care throughcontinuing education. /n
- Participate in workshops, conferences,and other training opportunities to maintain and enhance clinicalskills. /n
- Mentor and train new nurses or nursing students in theoperating room environment.

Qualifications:

Education:

- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred;Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required. /n /n /n

Licensure:

- Current state RN license in good standing. /n
- Certificationin Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular LifeSupport (ACLS) required.
