A Registered Nurse (RN) in Electrophysiology (EP) providesspecialized nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic andtherapeutic procedures related to heart rhythm disorders. EP nurseswork in collaboration with electrophysiologists and otherhealthcare professionals to assist in the management ofarrhythmias, conduct diagnostic tests such as electrophysiologystudies (EPS), and support patients through procedures likecatheter ablation, pacemaker or defibrillator implantation, andother treatments. This role requires expert knowledge of cardiaccare, advanced electrophysiology techniques, and the ability towork in high-stakes, fast-paced environments.

Key Responsibilities:
Pre-Procedure Assessment and Preparation :

Conduct thoroughpre-procedure assessments of patients, including reviewing medicalhistory, current medications, allergies, and previous cardiacconditions. Educate patients and their families about theelectrophysiology procedure, including the purpose, potentialrisks, and expected outcomes. Ensure patients are appropriatelyprepared for the procedure, including obtaining informed consent,performing vital sign checks, and ensuring lab work is completed(e.g., EKG, blood work). Monitor patient status prior to theprocedure, including sedation levels, anxiety management, and anycomorbid conditions (e.g., hypertension, diabetes). Assisting in

Electrophysiology Procedures :

Assist the electrophysiologistduring electrophysiology studies (EPS), which involve mapping theelectrical pathways of the heart. Set up and monitorelectrophysiology equipment, including the electrophysiology lab’selectrical mapping system, fluoroscopy, and other diagnostic tools.

Assist with the insertion of catheters into the heart via thefemoral vein, internal jugular vein, or other access points,ensuring patient safety and comfort. Monitor the patient’s vitalsigns, oxygenation levels, and electrocardiogram (ECG) during theprocedure. Administer sedatives, analgesics, or other medicationsas ordered, ensuring patient safety and managing potential sideeffects or complications. Assist with catheter ablation proceduresto treat arrhythmias, including monitoring for any adverse eventsduring the procedure.

Post-Procedure Care and Monitoring :

Monitorpatients closely after an EP procedure, including assessing vitalsigns, cardiac rhythms, and any signs of complications (e.g.,bleeding, infection, arrhythmia recurrence). Provide care forpatients recovering from sedation, ensuring they are stable andalert before discharge. Educate patients on post-procedure care,including wound care (for catheter insertion sites), activityrestrictions, medication management, and recognizing signs ofpotential complications (e.g., infection, bleeding). Coordinatewith the healthcare team to ensure follow-up appointments andongoing care, such as pacemaker or defibrillator programming orcardiac rehabilitation.

Patient Education and Emotional Support :

Provide education to patients and families regarding arrhythmias,pacemaker/defibrillator use, and lifestyle changes needed to managetheir heart condition. Address patients’ concerns and provideemotional support before, during, and after the procedure, helpingto alleviate anxiety and ensuring they are fully informed. Educatepatients about heart health, including the role of medication,activity restrictions, and long-term care following heart rhythmtreatments. Collaboration with the

Healthcare Team :

Work closelywith electrophysiologists, cardiologists, and other medicalprofessionals to ensure that patients receive optimal care duringand after the procedure. Communicate effectively with thehealthcare team, providing updates on patient status and anychanges in condition during or after the procedure. Collaborate inthe development of individualized care plans for patients witharrhythmias, ensuring appropriate treatments are delivered.

Participate in patient rounds to review and update care plans asnecessary.

Infection Control and Safety :

Follow strict infectioncontrol protocols during procedures, including sterile techniqueswhen inserting catheters and performing other invasive procedures.

Monitor for and address any signs of infection at catheterinsertion sites or internal device sites (e.g., pacemaker ordefibrillator). Ensure patient safety by monitoring for potentialcomplications, such as bleeding or arrhythmias, followingprocedures.

Documentation and Record-Keeping :

Maintain accurate,up-to-date documentation of patient assessments, procedures,medications administered, and outcomes. Ensure patient records arein compliance with institutional and regulatory standards,including HIPAA guidelines. Document any post-procedurecomplications, patient responses to treatment, and careinstructions provided to patients.

Emergency Response :

Respond toemergency situations, such as cardiac arrhythmias, complicationsfrom the procedure (e.g., catheter-induced trauma), or adversereactions to medications or anesthesia. Be prepared to initiatelife-saving measures such as advanced cardiac life support (ACLS)in the event of a cardiac arrest or other life-threateningconditions. Collaborate with the healthcare team to stabilizepatients and provide appropriate interventions in emergencysituations.
