Job Description
JAIL STAFF NURSEDISTINGUISHING FEAURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for providing professional nursing services to incarcerated individuals in the Jail facility requiring substantial specialized judgement and skills in accordance with a prescribed nursing care plan. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Jail Health Services and in accordance with establishedguidelines and regulations with leeway allowed in the exercise of independent judgement in carrying out the details of the job. The incumbent may supervise Licensed Practical Nurses and auxiliary nursing staff and monitor facility operation in the absence of administrative management staff. The incumbent does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
(Illustrative only)Assesses and interprets incarcerated individuals’ vital signs, physical indicators, as well as psychological and social needs upon intake and prepares, implements, and evaluates the nursing care plan;Provides skilled nursing care and prescribed treatment to incarcerated individuals in jail while maintaining security and control;Identifies physical and emotional illnesses of incarcerated individuals through observation and analysis of records;Maintains essential jail nursing care records and reports;May be responsible for assisting in the maintenance of a perpetual inventory of all controlled substances, toxic or dangerous drugs and medical supplies;May be responsible for ensuring that medications and supplies are ordered and on hand;Facilitate the operation of the MAT program;
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONALCHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of current professional nursing practices;Ability to work in an unpredictable environment with incarcerated individuals;Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships;Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;Ability to prepare and maintain reports;Ability to perform duties in accordance with ANA Code for Professional Nurses and other applicable codes and regulations;Ability to accept and utilize guidance;Sound judgement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a valid permit or license issued by the New York State Education Department to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse.
