POSITION SUMMARY

Utilizethe nursing process in the provision of direct patient care.

Responsible and accountable for prescribing, delegating, andcoordinating all care provided to assigned patients. Delivery ofcare is based on the standards of care and practices established bythe Department of Nursing and other policies and procedures(hospital, nursing, multidisciplinary). Diagnose and treat humanresponses to actual and potential health problems through suchservices as case finding, health teaching, health counseling, andprovision of care supportive or to restorative of life andwell-being. Supervise patient care provided by licensed practicalnurses (LPNs), registered nurses on permit (RNP), nursingattendants, technicians, and supplemental staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assess the immediate and continuing care needs of thepatient/significant other. Develop comprehensive and current plansof care which include physical needs, patient, patient teaching,and discharge planning and psychosocial/spiritual needs. Providedirect patient care based on assessed needs and the medicalregimen. Oversees and ensures the provision of all aspects of carefor the patient. Supervises the care provided by other nursingpersonnel as defined in the scope of practice. Observe, evaluate,document, and communicate to relevant team members the patient’sresponse to illness and/or therapeutic modalities. Ensures timelyreassessment of patient responses to treatment and when significantchanges occur in patient condition and/or diagnosis. Coordinate theoverall plan of care to ensure implementation of nursinginterventions and consistency with medical regimen. (a) Establishpriorities for care in collaboration with the multidisciplinaryteam and initiates follow-up, as indicated, to ensure timelyprovision of patient care and therapeutic modalities. (b) Assurethe plan of care integrates age-specific care needs (e.g.pediatrics, geriatrics) as defined in the unit scope of care.

Accept responsibility and accountability for nursing interventionsand outcomes based on professional clinical judgments. Participatein QI activities related to patient care delivery and thedevelopment of nursing/hospital standards. Demonstrate ability tocommunicate effectively, manage stressful situations appropriatelyand facilitate interpersonal relationships with other disciplines.

Other Responsibilities:

Participates in the orientation of nursingstaff. Assumes charge responsibilities as delegated by theNurse/Manager designee. Ensures appropriate coverage of allpatients by assisting and relieving co-workers, and working onother units as assigned. Maintains a safe, therapeutic environmentfor patients, significant others, and staff. Serves as a clinicalresource for student nurses. Participates in meetings, committees,conferences, and educational programs. Participates in research andpilot projects supported by the Nursing Department. Demonstratesresponsibility for continuing professional growth and education,including attendance at staff development and continuing educationprograms, pursuance of baccalaureate/graduate degrees in nursing,and appropriate professional certifications. Participates inappropriate professional and community organizations.

RequiredExperience:

3 -5 years’ experience in a Level I or II Trauma CenterAbility to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems,equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to thisposition. 6 months of EPIC experience

Knowledge and Skills:

Goodinterpersonal skills

Required Education:

BSN prepared

RequiredCertifications & Licensure:
TCAR, BLS, ACLS

Competent in CRRT,Impella, Swan-Ganz, A-lines, vent/tracheostomy and gastrostomytubes and medication titration

Preferred Certifications &Licensure:
CCRN TCRN
