Position Summary:

The professional school nurse supports student success by providing healthcare services through assessment, intervention and follow-up care for children within the school setting. The school nurse addresses the physical, mental, emotional and social health needs of students and supports their achievement in the learning process including students in the One Webster Learning program (OWL). By bridging the gap between healthcare and education, the school nurse plays an essential role in keeping children healthy, safe and ready to learn. This role includes working alongside another professional school nurse in the health office.

Accountabilities:

The School Nurse reports directly to the assigned building principal and Nurse Coordinator under the general direction of the Director of Elementary Education and the district physician. The school nurse provides nursing services to PreK-12th grade students in Webster CSD and associated private schools. Performance appraisals are conducted every 2 years by the Nurse Coordinator in collaboration with the building principal.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements + Registered Professional Nurse currently licensed by New York State Education Department + Current certification in CPR/BLS for Healthcare Professionals + Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position Highly Recommended + Bachelor’s degree (BSN/BS) or more advanced nursing education preferred. + Minimum 5 years RN nursing experience. Minimal 3 years experience in pediatrics, emergency care or school/community health nursing. School nurse experience is highly desirable. + Experience with specialized healthcare procedures, including but not limited to diabetes, gastrostomy and tracheostomy care. Essential Skills + Broad knowledge in the use of health assessments, nursing diagnoses, care plans, intervention procedures, referral resources and follow-up care as applicable in the school setting + Knowledge of state and local laws relating to health and social issues + Proficiency in computer skills including but not limited to electronic medical records, email, word processing and spreadsheet use and development + Communicates appropriately, collaboratively and effectively with students, teachers, parents, administrators and other community agencies + Ability to multitask, assess situations and make independent and timely decisions while exercising good professional judgment. + Self-motivated, independent and possesses excellent organizational and time-management skills

Essential Responsibilities:

The school nurse is responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating and evaluating school health services to maximize the quantity of in-class time by reducing the incidence of health-related absenteeism, minimize health problems which impair learning and promote the highest degree of independent functioning as possible. School Health Services Manager + Practices scientific evidence-based medicine to promote safety and protect the optimal health status of school-aged children. + Assures that the school is in compliance with mandatory health service activities, including but not limited to immunizations, health appraisals, vision/hearing/scoliosis screenings. + Participates in the implementation and review of school health services and procedures. + Plans, trains and oversees health-related personnel working in the health office. + Creates, maintains, and analyzes records, reports, and data, as required by the district and state. + Provides a safe system for medication administration and documentation. Evaluates response to medication and alerts parents/health care providers as appropriate. + Determines health accommodations needed for off-site field trips during school the school day for credit bearing courses, including medication preparation, medical procedures and determining the need/ arranging for nursing staff to attend. + Plans and participates in disaster preparedness, including but not limited to fire drills, organizing and maintaining KI tablets and emergency evacuation plan per school and district protocols. + Maintains the confidentiality, integrity and security of protected health information in verbal and manual/electronic written formats. + Maintains and evaluates cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students. + Assists with planning and implementing school health management protocols. + Promotes and implements communicable disease control by complying with and enforcing state and district health regulations and guidelines. Participates in district wide illness surveillance, monitoring, disease prevention initiatives, and outbreak management. + Records accurately, services rendered and interprets and explains records, reports, activities, health plans accommodations and interventions. + Documents, compiles, and completes required state and district level reports, including but not limited to annual immunization survey, periodic BMI data collection, and school health office end of year report and self-evaluation. + Maintains certifications and continuing education requirements set forth by the state and district, including but not limited to professional licensure, CPR and infection control. + Actively participates in district nurse meetings and continuing education opportunities. Direct Care Provider + Utilizes strong critical thinking and assessment skills to astutely triage student health concerns, effectively intervenes and evaluates treatment, and demonstrates timely follow up and thorough documentation of events. + Provides nursing management of injuries and illnesses for all students in the school setting. + Responds promptly to health-related emergencies involving students, staff and visitors, including first aid and CPR. + Successfully carries out the medical orders and procedures prescribed by the healthcare provider, clarifying questions related to those orders with the HCP/parents as they arise. + Performs health screens, evaluates findings, and makes appropriate referrals for deficits in vision, hearing, and scoliosis as required by the state. + Assists with routine health appraisals, special exams for sport recertification and student employment certificates. Case Manager for Students with Special Health Needs + Identifies students with special health needs. + Develops emergency action plans for students at risk for medical crises at school or during a school function. + Develops and maintains an IHP for students who require medical procedures during the school day, and who require medical adaptation of the learning environment or classroom schedule. + Functions as a health resource for chronically ill students and their families. + Participates in consultation and recommendation in the development of health accommodations for students with health-related 504s and IEPs. + Updates student IEPs annually and 504 plans as needed utilizing the required electronic system. + Maintains Medicaid NPI and participates in the Medicaid claiming process on qualified students Collaborator/Advocator + Interprets and communicates student health needs to parents and school personnel in order to facilitate understanding of and adjusting to changes and limitations due to health issues. + Identify barriers to learning (ie, at risk behaviors, medical, financial, cultural, economical, etc). + Initiates referrals to parents, school personnel or community health resources for intervention, remediation and follow-through. + Utilizes existing health resources to provide appropriate care to students. + Identifies and reports environmental safety issues and collaborates with other personnel to develop procedures to reduce and prevent injury/illness. + Actively participates in the school’s crisis team and other school/ district health related groups. + Functions as a liaison between educators, parents, and medical providers to promote and maintain optimal health-related outcomes for each student. Educator + Promotes Blood Borne Pathogen/Universal Precaution awareness, maintains a current hard copy of the district’s Exposure Control Manual and serves as a resource to staff. + Provides school personnel health-related skills training and education surrounding the management of student health conditions, as well as general health emergencies. + Provides health-related skills training and education to students to empower them to become self-reliant and reach their maximum level of independence with their health care needs. + Participates in development and implementation of health promotion activities in the school. Health Counselor + Provides ongoing health counseling to students and their families to maximize school attendance and classroom participation. + Provides health counseling to students to assist them in making informed and safe decisions regarding their health and well-being.

Salary:

As per current Educational Support Association Agreement (ESA) as well as education and experience.
