Job Description Job Summary:

The 1:1 School Nurse provides direct medical care, support, and health monitoring for a specific student with special needs during the school day. This includes implementing the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or Individualized Health Plan (IHP), administering medication, managing medical equipment, and ensuring the student’s health and safety throughout the school day and during school-related activities.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide continuous, direct nursing care to one student with complex medical needs during school hours. Monitor and respond to the student’s daily medical needs and emergencies, including seizure management, respiratory support, and feeding assistance. Administer medications, including injections, tube feedings, and other prescribed treatments per doctor’s orders. Maintain accurate and up-to-date health records, medication logs, and communication with healthcare providers and family. Collaborate with teachers, paraprofessionals, therapists, and school staff to support the student’s access to education. Accompany the student to all school activities including classroom, playground, cafeteria, field trips, etc. Follow and update the student’s Individualized Health Plan (IHP) or Emergency Care Plan (ECP) as needed. Educate and train school staff on relevant health conditions and emergency procedures, as appropriate. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations. Ensure a safe and supportive environment that promotes the student’s dignity and independence as much as possible.

Qualifications:

Licensure:

Current Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in NY.

Certification:

CPR and First Aid certified; additional pediatric or special needs certifications preferred.

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of nursing experience; experience with pediatric, school-based, or special needs nursing strongly preferred. Strong communication, observation, and critical thinking skills. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team. Compassion, patience, and dedication to working with children with complex medical and developmental needs.

Working Conditions:

School environment with varied settings (classroom, outdoors, therapy rooms). Physical ability to assist with lifting or transferring the student as needed. May require flexible scheduling based on student needs and school calendar.
