POSITION SUMMARY
- Utilize the nursingprocess in the provision of direct patient care.
- Responsible andaccountable for prescribing, delegating, and coordinating all careprovided to assigned patients.
- Delivery of care is based on thestandards of care and practices established by the Department ofNursing and other policies and procedures (hospital, nursing,multidisciplinary). Diagnose and treat human responses to actualand potential health problems through such services as casefinding, health teaching, health counseling, and provision of caresupportive or to restorative of life and well-being.
- Supervisepatient care provided by licensed practical nurses (LPNs),registered nurses on permit (RNP), nursing attendants, technicians,and supplemental staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assess the immediate andcontinuing care needs of the patient/significant other.
- Developcomprehensive and current plans of care which include physicalneeds, patient, patient teaching, and discharge planning andpsychosocial/spiritual needs.
- Provide direct patient care basedon assessed needs and the medical regimen. Oversees and ensures theprovision of all aspects of care for the patient. Supervises thecare provided by other nursing personnel as defined in the scope ofpractice.
- Observe, evaluate, document, and communicate torelevant team members the patient’s response to illness and/ortherapeutic modalities. Ensures timely reassessment of patientresponses to treatment and when significant changes occur inpatient condition and/or diagnosis.
- Coordinate the overall planof care to ensure implementation of nursing interventions andconsistency with medical regimen.
(a) Establish priorities for carein collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and initiatesfollow-up, as indicated, to ensure timely provision of patient careand therapeutic modalities. (b) Assure the plan of care integratesage-specific care needs (e.g. pediatrics, geriatrics) as defined inthe unit scope of care.
- Accept responsibility and accountabilityfor nursing interventions and outcomes based on professionalclinical judgments.
- Participate in QI activities related topatient care delivery and the development of nursing/hospitalstandards.
- Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively, managestressful situations appropriately and facilitate interpersonalrelationships with other disciplines.
Other Responsibilities:
- Participates in the orientation of nursing staff.
- Assumes chargeresponsibilities as delegated by the Nurse/Manager designee.
- Ensures appropriate coverage of all patients by assisting andrelieving co-workers, and working on other units as assigned.
- Maintains a safe, therapeutic environment for patients, significantothers, and staff.
- Serves as a clinical resource for studentnurses.
- Participates in meetings, committees, conferences, andeducational programs.
- Participates in research and pilot projectssupported by the Nursing Department.
- Demonstrates responsibilityfor continuing professional growth and education, includingattendance at staff development and continuing education programs,pursuance of baccalaureate/graduate degrees in nursing, andappropriate professional certifications.
- Participates inappropriate professional and community organizations.
RequiredExperience:
- 3•5 years’ experience in a Level I or II TraumaCenter•Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems,equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to thisposition.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Good interpersonal skills
Required Education:
- BSN prepared
Required Certifications &Licensure:
-
TCAR, BLS, ACLS
- Competent in CRRT, Impella,Swan-Ganz, A-lines, vent/tracheostomy and gastrostomy tubes andmedication titration
Preferred Certifications & Licensure:
- CCRN
