Evaluation:

This position is evaluated at least annually by the CEO/Principal. Evaluation is based upon fulfillment of duties and responsibilities listed in the job description below and components of professional practice for School Nurses from Charlotte Danielson Framework.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong interpersonal skills include the ability to work effectively with teachers, parents, and students. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to meet timelines. Must be able to speak clearly and distinctly; be able to read correspondence/computer screen; and have an auditory acuity sufficient to communicate via telephone. Must be courteous, friendly, cooperative, service-oriented, able to work independently or in a team, and multitask. Must be able to sit/stand for extended periods; walk throughout buildings; lift/carry at least 20 pounds; bend, twist, reach, stoop, grasp, and have sufficient dexterity to operate office equipment.

Responsibilities:

The essential job functions include but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties: Coordinate, collaborate, plan for, and, in most cases, provide direct services to ensure that the school’s health program, as defined by the Pennsylvania School Code, Gettysburg Montessori Charter School (“GMCS”) Policies, and the PA Dept. of Health Division of School. Health Regulations are carried out according to the specifics in the Law (Mandated programs) and within the parameters established for approved Modified programs. Maintain and/or improve the health status of students, thus enabling them to profit fully from their educational experiences. Promote optimum health status and lifestyles for all students through the joint efforts of the home, school, and community. Develops and maintains a comprehensive school health services program for students, following the guidelines of the PA School Code, PA DOH Regulations, the Division of School Health guidelines, PA DOE Regulations, and GMCS Policies. Assists with school administrators, school physicians, and dentists in planning and organizing the school health program. Consult with school administrators to establish, review, and revise policies and procedures for a comprehensive school health program. Schedules dental and physical exams. Provides up-to-date information for the use of school personnel on such subjects as the growth and development pattern of children, first aid practice, accident prevention, and communicable disease regulations, assists in evaluating the content material used for health teaching, and offers assistance in providing sources of information. Uses data collected to help plan and evaluate the school health program. Ensures that reports required by the school district, PA Dept. of Health, Div. of School Health, and PA Dept. of Education are properly prepared and forwarded. Provides direct services to students, using the nursing process to provide care to the school community. Medical practice and nursing standards, relevant statutes, and regulations. Performs and/or oversees mandated screenings and completes referrals and follow-ups where applicable. Manages and controls acute and chronic disease. Carries out policies and procedures for the control of communicable diseases, in collaboration with the PA Department of Health. Provides first aid for illness or injury to students and documents nursing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. May establish health care plans for students with special health care needs and update them as needed. Reviews and monitors student immunization status. Make appropriate referrals to update immunizations when indicated. Provides health teaching and counseling. Maintains comprehensive health records on each child and records of school nursing services. Assists in interpreting the health needs of individual children to parents and teachers and assists families in utilizing community resources for improving the health of their children. Administers medications and performs procedures according to physician orders and school district policies and procedures. Ensures physician orders for individual student medications and/or treatments comply with requirements for administration. Informs teachers of the health conditions of pupils which may affect behavior, appearance, or scholastic performance. Facilitates an organized system of coordinated care for students. Collaborates with agencies within and outside of the school community to ensure continuity of service and care of students, including working with private physicians and dentists to coordinate private medical and dental examinations with the school program.
