Purpose:
TheProfessional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse and a member of thecare delivery team. The Professional Staff Nurse is responsible toset the standards for the level and quality of care. TheProfessional Staff Nurse has responsibility, authority andaccountability for the provision of nursing care. The ProfessionalStaff Nurse manages and provides patient care activities for agroup of patients and their families through the application ofindependent judgment, communication and collaboration with all teammembers. The role of the Professional Staff Nurse encompassesleadership, partnership, collaboration and supervision. TheProfessional Staff Nurse establishes and maintains collaborativerelationships with physicians, other health care providers,patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomesthroughout the continuum of care. The Professional Staff Nursedemonstrates a commitment to the community and to the nursingprofession. The individual must be able to demonstrate theknowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interactappropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/herassigned unit as specified below. /n Less than 1 year away fromgraduating nursing school /n Ability to establish and maintainpositive, caring relationships with executives, managers,physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff,other departments, and patients/families. /n Ability to workproductively and effectively within a complex environment, handlemultiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment. Goodclinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problemsolving abilities required as related to various aspects of patientcare. Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to leadothers in application of the nursing process. Mobility and visualmanual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing,lifting and positioning of patients. /n UPMC offers a variety offlexible options in addition to traditional rotating/flexibleshifts, special programs exist to work primarily night shifts orweekend shifts with a premium pay differential. Employees hired asor who choose to transition into one of these programs at a latertime must have at least 6 months of nursing experience to qualifyand may be required to complete any necessary orientation duringregular business hours. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
UPMC approvednational certification preferred. Current licensure as a RegisteredProfessional Nurse either in the state where the facility islocated or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement withthe state where the facility is located. CPR required based on AHAstandards that include both a didactic and skills demonstrationcomponent within 30 days of hire. Graduate nurses must completelicensure examination within
SIX MONTHS
of hire or within one yearof graduation, whichever comes first. Though temporary permits arevalid for one year from the date of graduation, not one year fromissue of permit (or until the results of the examination are knownat which time it becomes null and void), UPMC requires that GNstake the licensure examination within 6 months of their start dateor they will be terminated or demoted from the GN position, at thediscretion of the

- Registered Nurse (RN) OR Temporary Practice Permit (TPP)/n
- Act 34 /n /n
- Current licensure either in the state where thefacility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered bythe multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, amultistate license issued by a participating NLC state.
