Job Description The Senior Professional Staff Nurse II is aRegistered Nurse, a member of the care delivery team, andresponsible for seeking opportunities to assist in changingpractice through process improvement. The Senior Professional StaffNurse II is responsible to set the standards for the level andquality of care. The Senior Professional Staff Nurse II hasresponsibility, authority and accountability for the provision ofnursing care. The Senior Professional Staff Nurse II manages andprovides patient care activities for a group of patients and theirfamilies through the application of independent judgment,communication and collaboration with all team members. The role ofthe Senior Professional Staff Nurse II encompasses leadership,partnership, collaboration and supervision. The Senior ProfessionalStaff Nurse II establishes and maintains collaborativerelationships with physicians, other health care providers,patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomesthroughout the continuum of care. The Senior Professional StaffNurse II demonstrates a commitment to the community and to thenursing profession.
Responsibilities:

- Serves as a rolemodel of professional nursing practice by serving as a recognizedunit leader in one or more of the following areas: clinicalexpertise, teacher, specialized resource nurse, and/orevidence-based practice.
Consistently gives appropriate feedback toall members of the health care team and participates in the nursingpeer review process. Promotes change that enhances the quality ofpatient care and the unit environment. Serves on teams and leadssuccessful teams as a part of daily practice. Demonstrates highlydeveloped clinical assessment and analytical skills within thecontext of Relationship Based Care. Actively participates in sharedgovernance at unit level and serves on hospital-wide councils. /n
- Builds and mends relationships among colleagues within theframework of a healthy workplace. Role models keen culturalawareness including preventing and addressing horizontal violenceand impairment. Maintains a conscious balance between work andpersonal life through prioritization and delegation ofresponsibilities. /n
- Applies the nursing process within theframework of Relationship Based Care to create a healingenvironment.
Formulates daily goals and a plan of care for patientsthat involves the patient as partner and considers the individualneeds of the patient in a holistic manner. Practices solidcommunication skills and is able to articulate and translate thepatient’s condition to other care providers and to negotiate andmake recommendations for changes in patient care and unitpractices. Patient documentation is comprehensive and promotescommunication between caregivers. Demonstrates critical thinking inthe identification of clinical, social, safety, psychological andspiritual issues for the patient care within an episode of care.
Incorporates national professional organization as well as businessunit and health system’s goals to improve patient safety, qualityand satisfaction of the patient experience in daily work. Creates acaring and compassionate patient focused experience by buildinghealing relationships with patients, families and colleagues. /n
- Identifies opportunities for clinical quality as well as workplaceimprovement. Applies evidence based practice as a regular aspect ofprofessional practice. Serves on or leads teams that launchinnovations in patient care or support a healthy workforce. /n
- Demonstrates a passion for developing others, enthusiastically andexpertly precepts students, graduate nurses and new hires.
Analyzesclinical and behavioral situations, identifying learningopportunities to improve patient care practices. Regularly seeksfeedback on performance and applies continuous professionalimprovement. Supports continuous learning in the clinical area bysharing research, materials from professional organizations,presenting on the unit, supporting journal clubs, etc. /n
- Musthave previous ED, ICU, or Perianesthesia experience. /n /n
- Minimum 3 years experience.
BSN preferred. Completion of 1contribution as set forth through UPMC’s My Nursing Career Ladder.
UPMC approved nursing certification required. Certification notrequired if Master’s in nursing or DNP is held. If a BSN is held, aMaster’s degree in a related field may be substituted in lieu ofCertification. /n
- The individual must be able to demonstrate theknowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interactappropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/herassigned unit as specified below. /n
- They must also demonstrateknowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and possess the ability to assess data reflective of thepatient’s status and interpret the appropriate information neededto identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/herage-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described inthe department policy and procedures. /n
- Must obtain aSolid/Strong/Good or higher on a Professional Staff NursePerformance Evaluation to be promoted to this level. Must maintaina Solid/Strong/Good or higher on annual performance evaluation tomaintain status. Must have VP approval for promotion. /n
- Abilityto establish and maintain positive, caring relationships withexecutives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers,ancillary and support staff, other departments, andpatients/families. /n
- Ability to work productively andeffectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changingpriorities and specialized equipment. /n
- Exemplary clinicaljudgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solvingabilities required as related to various aspects of patient care./n
- Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to leadothers in application of the nursing process. /n
- Mobility andvisual manual dexterity.
Physical stamina for frequent walking,standing, lifting and positioning of patients. /n /n
Licensure,Certifications, and Clearances:
Current Pennsylvania licensure as aRegistered Professional Nurse. CPR required based on AHA standardsthat include both a didactic and skills demonstration componentwithin 30 days of hire /n /n
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)OR Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) /n
- Basic Life Support(BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) /n
- Registered Nurse(RN) /n
- Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal /n
- Act 33with renewal /n
- Act 34 with renewal /n
- Act 73 FBI Clearancewith renewal /n /n
- Current licensure either in the state where thefacility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered bythe multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, amultistate license issued by a participating NLC state.
