Purpose:
The Senior Professional StaffNurse II is a Registered Nurse, a member of the care delivery team,and responsible for seeking opportunities to assist in changingpractice through process improvement. The Senior Professional StaffNurse II is responsible to set the standards for the level andquality of care. The Senior Professional Staff Nurse II hasresponsibility, authority and accountability for the provision ofnursing care. The Senior Professional Staff Nurse II manages andprovides patient care activities for a group of patients and theirfamilies through the application of independent judgment,communication and collaboration with all team members. The role ofthe Senior Professional Staff Nurse II encompasses leadership,partnership, collaboration and supervision. The Senior ProfessionalStaff Nurse II establishes and maintains collaborativerelationships with physicians, other health care providers,patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomesthroughout the continuum of care. The Senior Professional StaffNurse II demonstrates a commitment to the community and to thenursing profession.
Responsibilities:

- Demonstrates apassion for developing others, enthusiastically and expertlyprecepts students, graduate nurses and new hires.
Analyzes clinicaland behavioral situations, identifying learning opportunities toimprove patient care practices. Regularly seeks feedback onperformance and applies continuous professional improvement.
Supports continuous learning in the clinical area by sharingresearch, materials from professional organizations, presenting onthe unit, supporting journal clubs, etc. /n
- Applies the nursingprocess within the framework of Relationship Based Care to create ahealing environment.
Formulates daily goals and a plan of care forpatients that involves the patient as partner and considers theindividual needs of the patient in a holistic manner. Practicessolid communication skills and is able to articulate and translatethe patient’s condition to other care providers and to negotiateand make recommendations for changes in patient care and unitpractices. Patient documentation is comprehensive and promotescommunication between caregivers. Demonstrates critical thinking inthe identification of clinical, social, safety, psychological andspiritual issues for the patient care within an episode of care.
Incorporates national professional organization as well as businessunit and health system’s goals to improve patient safety, qualityand satisfaction of the patient experience in daily work. Creates acaring and compassionate patient focused experience by buildinghealing relationships with patients, families and colleagues. /n
- Builds and mends relationships among colleagues within theframework of a healthy workplace. Role models keen culturalawareness including preventing and addressing horizontal violenceand impairment. Maintains a conscious balance between work andpersonal life through prioritization and delegation ofresponsibilities. /n
- Identifies opportunities for clinicalquality as well as workplace improvement. Applies evidence-basedpractice as a regular aspect of professional practice. Serves on orleads teams that launch innovations in patient care or support ahealthy workforce. /n
- Serves as a role model of professionalnursing practice by serving as a recognized unit leader in one ormore of the following areas: clinical expertise, teacher,specialized resource nurse, and/or evidence-based practice.
Consistently gives appropriate feedback to all members of thehealth care team and participates in the nursing peer reviewprocess. Promotes change that enhances the quality of patient careand the unit environment. Serves on teams and leads successfulteams as a part of daily practice. Demonstrates highly developedclinical assessment and analytical skills within the context ofRelationship Based Care. Actively participates in shared governanceat unit level and serves on hospital-wide councils. /n
- Performsin accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. /n
- Performs other duties as assigned. /n /n
- Minimum 3 years’experience. /n
- BSN preferred. /n
- Completion of 1 contributionas set forth through UPMC’s My Nursing Career Ladder. /n
- UPMCapproved nursing certification required. /n
- Certification notrequired if Master’s in nursing or DNP is held. /n
- If a BSN isheld, a Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted inlieu of Certification. /n
- The individual must be able todemonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide careand/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served byhis/her assigned unit as specified below. /n
- They must alsodemonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and developmentover the life span and possess the ability to assess datareflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriateinformation needed to identify each patient’s requirements relativeto his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs asdescribed in the department policy and procedures. /n
- Must obtaina Solid/Strong/Good or higher on a Professional Staff NursePerformance Evaluation to be promoted to this level. /n
- Mustmaintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on annual performanceevaluation to maintain status. /n
- Must have VP approval forpromotion. /n
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, caringrelationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physicianproviders, ancillary and support staff, other departments, andpatients/families. /n
- Ability to work productively andeffectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changingpriorities and specialized equipment. /n
- Exemplary clinicaljudgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem-solvingabilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead othersin application of the nursing process. Mobility and visual manualdexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, liftingand positioning of patients.

Additional License Requirements:

- CurrentPennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse. CPRrequired based on AHA standards that include both a didactic andskills demonstration component within 30 days of hire /n
- BasicLife Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) /n
- Registered Nurse (RN) /n /n /n /n
- Current licensure either in thestate where the facility is located or, if the facility is in astate covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC)agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLCstate.
