Purpose:

The Professional StaffNurse is a Registered Nurse and a member of the care delivery team.

The Professional Staff Nurse is responsible to set the standardsfor the level and quality of care. The Professional Staff Nurse hasresponsibility, authority and accountability for the provision ofnursing care. The Professional Staff Nurse manages and providespatient care activities for a group of patients and their familiesthrough the application of independent judgment, communication andcollaboration with all team members. The role of the ProfessionalStaff Nurse encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration andsupervision. The Professional Staff Nurse establishes and maintainscollaborative relationships with physicians, other health careproviders, patients and their families, to achieve desired patientoutcomes throughout the continuum of care. The Professional StaffNurse demonstrates a commitment to the community and to the nursingprofession.

Responsibilities:

  • Actively participates indepartment or unit-specific quality improvement efforts.

Identifiesopportunity for quality improvement to colleagues and management.

Takes personal responsibility in improving patient satisfactionwith the quality of care and service. Utilizes research andevidence-based practice to support improvement in clinical care:identifies research issues or articles related to clinicalspecialty or areas of interest, discusses opportunities for qualityimprovement at multidisciplinary rounds, and influences patients’plans of care. /n

  • Applies the nursing process within theframework of Relationship Based Care to create a healingenvironment.

Formulates daily goals and a plan of care for patientsthat involves the patient as partner and considers the individualneeds of the patient in a holistic manner. Demonstrates criticalthinking in the identification of clinical, social, safety,psychological and spiritual issues for the patient care within anepisode of care. Practices solid communication skills and is ableto articulate and translate the patient’s condition to other careproviders and to negotiate and make recommendations for changes inpatient care and unit practices. Patient documentation iscomprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers.

Incorporates national professional organization as well as businessunit and health system’s goals to improve patient safety, qualityand satisfaction. Creates a caring and compassionate patientfocused experience by building healing relationships with patients,families and colleagues. /n

  • Develops and maintains productiveworking relationships internally and externally by demonstratingaccountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitmentto patients and colleagues.

Demonstrates an understanding ofcultural differences and holds peers accountable for healthyrelationships. Maintains a conscious balance between work andpersonal life.   • Demonstrates knowledge of adult learningprinciples (and/or teaching children if applicable) and applies inteaching of patients, families, students and new staff.

Providesdetailed and appropriate teaching to patients and families toeffectively guide them through the episode of care as well astransition to another level of care and/or home. Supports thedevelopment of students, new staff and colleagues, may serve as apreceptor. Creates an environment of open dialogue, inquiry andcontinuous development by asking for feedback and improvingpractice. /n /n

  • The individual must be able to demonstrate theknowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interactappropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/herassigned unit as specified below. /n
  • They must also demonstrateknowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and possess the ability to assess data reflective of thepatient’s status and interpret the appropriate information neededto identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/herage-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described inthe department policy and procedures. /n
  • Zero to two years ofexperience. /n
  • BSN required. /n
  • Ability to establish andmaintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers,physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff,other departments, and patients/families. /n
  • Ability to workproductively and effectively within a complex environment, handlemultiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment. /n
  • Goodclinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical andproblem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects ofpatient care. /n
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exerciseand to lead others in application of the nursing process. /n
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity. /n
  • Physical stamina forfrequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients. /n
  • UPMC offers a variety of flexible options in addition totraditional rotating/flexible shifts, special programs exist towork primarily night shifts or weekend shifts with a premium paydifferential.

Employees hired as or who choose to transition intoone of these programs at a later time must have at least 6 monthsof nursing experience to qualify and may be required to completeany necessary orientation during regular business hours. Licensure, Certifications, andClearances:

/n

  • UPMC approved national certification preferred. /n
  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse either inthe state where the facility is located or in a state covered by alicensure compact agreement with the state where the facility islocated. /n
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include botha didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days ofhire. /n
  • Graduate nurses must complete licensure examinationwithin
SIX MONTHS

of hire or within one year of graduation,whichever comes first. Though temporary permits are valid for oneyear from the date of graduation, not one year from issue of permit(or until the results of the examination are known at which time itbecomes null and void), UPMC requires that GNs take the licensureexamination within 6 months of their start date or they will beterminated or demoted from the GN position, at the discretion ofthe BU. /n

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR CardiopulmonaryResuscitation (CPR) /n
  • Registered Nurse (RN) OR TemporaryPractice Permit (TPP) /n
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting withrenewal /n
  • Act 33 with renewal /n
  • Act 34 with renewal /n
  • Act73 FBI Clearance with renewal /n /n
  • Current licensure either inthe state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in astate covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC)agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLCstate.
