Purpose:

The ProfessionalStaff Nurse is a Registered Nurse is a member of the care deliveryteam. The Professional Staff Nurse is responsible to set thestandards for the level and quality of care. The Professional StaffNurse has responsibility, authority and accountability for theprovision of nursing care. The Professional Staff Nurse manages andprovides patient care activities for a group of patients and theirfamilies through the application of independent judgment,communication and collaboration with all team members. TheProfessional Staff Nurse establishes and maintains collaborativerelationships with physicians, other health care providers,patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomesthroughout the continuum of care. The Professional Staff Nursedemonstrates a commitment to the community and to the nursingprofession.

Responsibilities:

  • Actively participates indepartment or practice-specific quality improvement efforts.

Identifies opportunity for quality improvement to colleagues andmanagement. Takes personal responsibility in improving patientsatisfaction with the quality of care and service. Utilizesresearch and evidence-based practice to support improvement inclinical care: identifies research issues or articles related toclinical specialty or areas of interest /n

  • Ability to establishand maintain positive, caring relationships with executives,managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary andsupport staff, other departments, and patients/families.

Ability towork productively and effectively within a complex environment,handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment. Goodclinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical andproblem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects ofpatient care. Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and tolead others in application of the nursing process. Mobility andvisual manual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking,standing, lifting and positioning of patients. /n

  • Demonstratesknowledge of adult learning principles (and/or teaching children ifapplicable) and applies in teaching of patients, families, studentsand new staff.

Provides detailed and appropriate teaching topatients and families to effectively guide them through the episodeof care both in the office setting and via phone/writtencommunication when at home. Supports the development of students,new staff and colleagues. Creates an environment of open dialogue,inquiry and continuous development by asking for feedback andimproving practice. /n

  • Formulates goals and a plan of care forpatients that involves the patient as partner and considers theindividual needs of the patient in a holistic manner.

Triagespatient situations and coordinates care with physician. Assistphysician with all aspects of patient care including assessment,evaluation and education. Demonstrates critical thinking in theidentification of clinical, social, safety, psychological andspiritual issues for the patient care within an episode of care.

Practices solid communication skills and is able to articulate andtranslate the patient’s condition to other care providers and tonegotiate and make recommendations for changes in patient care andoffice practices. Patient documentation is comprehensive andpromotes communication between caregivers. Incorporates nationalprofessional organization as well as business unit and healthsystem’s goals to improve patient safety, quality and satisfaction.

Creates a caring and compassionate patient focused experience bybuilding healing relationships with patients, families andcolleagues. /n

  • Demonstrates accountability for professionaldevelopment that improves the quality of professional practice andthe quality of patient care.

Actively participates inpractice-based shared governance, goal setting and supports thechange and transition process to improve quality of care and thepractice environment. Serves as a highly engaged and full partneron the care team and responds willingly to care team member needsfor assistance and partnership. Participates in work that improvespatient care and the professional practice environment. Adapts tochange and demonstrates flexibility with the change process. /n

  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internallyand externally by demonstrating accountability for actions,enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues.

Demonstrates an understanding of cultural differences and holdspeers accountable for healthy relationships. Maintains a consciousbalance between work and personal life. Models safe work hours,time management and healthy lifestyle. Communicates with peers andmanagement any safety hazards identified in the workplace. /n /n

  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skillsnecessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the agesof the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below./n
  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles ofgrowth and development over the life span and possess the abilityto assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret theappropriate information needed to identify each patient’srequirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to providethe care needs as described in the department policy andprocedures. /n
  • Minimum six months experience preferred. /n
  • BSNpreferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

/n

  • UPMCapproved national certification preferred. /n
  • Current licensureas a Registered Professional Nurse either in the state where thefacility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compactagreement with the state where the facility is located. /n
  • CPRrequired based on AHA standards that include both a didactic andskills demonstration component within 30 days of hire. /n
  • Graduate nurses must complete licensure examination within
SIXMONTHS

of hire or within one year of graduation, whichever comesfirst. Though temporary permits are valid for one year from thedate of graduation, not one year from issue of permit (or until theresults of the examination are known at which time it becomes nulland void), UPMC requires that GNs take the licensure examinationwithin 6 months of their start date or they will be terminated ordemoted from the GN position, at the discretion of the BU. /n

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) /n
  • Registered Nurse (RN) OR Temporary Practice Permit (TPP) /n
  • Act31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal /n
  • Act 33 with renewal /n
  • Act 34 with renewal /n
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal /n /n
  • Current licensure either in the state where the facility islocated or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistateNursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate licenseissued by a participating NLC state.
