We are looking for an experienced, caring, compassionate, team-oriented nurse with a passion for learning who excels in critical thinking! The TNICU is a 16-bed unit on the second floor of the patient care tower. The exceptional care provided in this unit contributes to UPMC Hamot’s certification as a Level II Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center. Purpose:
The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse who plays a key role in delivering high-quality patient care. They are accountable for setting care standards, managing patient care, and collaborating with healthcare teams. Their responsibilities include leadership, communication, and supervision, ensuring effective care for patients and their families. They also foster strong relationships with physicians and other providers to achieve optimal outcomes and demonstrate a commitment to both the community and the nursing profession.
Responsibilities:

Maintains work-life balance and models healthy habits and time management. Reports workplace safety hazards to peers and management. Applies adult (and pediatric, if applicable) learning principles in patient, family, and staff education. Provides thorough teaching to support patient transitions and care understanding. Supports development of students and new staff; may serve as a preceptor. Encourages open dialogue and continuous improvement through feedback. Uses the nursing process and Relationship-Based Care to create personalized, holistic care plans. Demonstrates critical thinking in identifying and addressing diverse patient needs. Communicates effectively with care teams and documents comprehensively. Aligns care with organizational and professional goals to enhance safety, quality, and satisfaction. Builds compassionate, healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues. Commits to ongoing professional development and quality improvement. Uses evidence-based practice and research to inform and improve clinical care. 1-2 years of experience required; BSN preferred. Demonstrates age-specific care knowledge and skills per unit requirements. Understands growth and development across the lifespan to assess and meet patient needs. Builds and maintains positive, caring relationships with all levels of staff and patients/families. Functions effectively in complex environments with shifting priorities and specialized equipment. Exhibits strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Leads others in applying the nursing process. Requires mobility, manual dexterity, and physical stamina for frequent patient handling. Flexible scheduling options available, including night/weekend shift programs with premium pay. Special shift programs require 6+ months of nursing experience and may include daytime orientation.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire. Registered Nurse (RN) Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located. UPMC approved national certification preferred. Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
