Travel The Registered Nurse (RN) in Laborand Delivery (L&D) is responsible for providing comprehensivecare to women during labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartumperiod. The RN in this specialty is skilled in managing bothroutine and high-risk pregnancies, monitoring fetal and maternalwell-being, and assisting with deliveries. The L&D nursecollaborates with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, andother healthcare professionals to provide safe, compassionate, andeffective care to both mothers and newborns. Key Responsibilities

  • Pre-Labor and Admission Assessment:
  • Assess and monitor thehealth of pregnant women at various stages of labor, includinggathering health histories, vital signs, and physical assessments
  • Perform non-stress tests (NSTs), monitor fetal heart tones, andevaluate uterine activity for signs of labor progression.
  • Educatepatients on labor and delivery processes, pain management options,and what to expect during childbirth.
  • Labor Support andMonitoring:
  • Monitor the progress of labor through regularassessment of contraction patterns, cervical dilation, fetal heartrate, and maternal vital signs.
  • Administer medications, includingepidurals, Pitocin, and pain relief options, as prescribed, andmonitor their effects.
  • Provide continuous emotional support andpain management throughout the labor process, using comfortmeasures, including positioning, breathing techniques, and offeringencouragement.
  • Assist with amniotomy, if necessary, and otherprocedures as directed by the healthcare team.

Delivery:
  • Assist obstetricians or midwives during vaginaldeliveries, including providing instrumentation assistance,suctioning, and other necessary actions during the birth.
  • Participate in cesarean section procedures by ensuring the sterilefield, assisting with the delivery process, and providing immediatenewborn care after birth.
  • Perform neonatal resuscitation andinitial assessment of the newborn’s health immediately afterdelivery.
  • Postpartum Care:
  • Monitor the health and recovery ofboth the mother and the newborn in the immediate postpartum period,including assessing vital signs, bleeding, and uterine tone.
  • Assist with breastfeeding support, including teaching proper latchtechniques, positioning, and addressing any concerns related toinfant care.
  • Provide education on postpartum recovery, self-care,and newborn care, such as diapering, bathing, and recognizing signsof illness.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
  • Document allassessments, interventions, medications, and patient progressaccurately in the electronic health record (EHR) to maintaincompliance with hospital policies and legal standards.
  • Maintainaccurate and timely records of labor and delivery processes,including patient and fetal monitoring results.
  • Collaboration andCommunication:
  • Work closely with obstetricians,anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and other healthcare teammembers to plan and implement individualized care for each patient
  • Communicate clearly with patients and families about the progressof labor, potential complications, and available options, ensuringthat informed consent is obtained for procedures when necessary.
  • Infection Control and Safety:
  • Follow infection control proceduresto maintain a safe and sterile environment for labor, delivery, andpostpartum care.
  • Ensure that all equipment used during labor anddelivery is properly sterilized and functioning, including fetalmonitoring devices, IV pumps, and delivery instruments.
  • Emergencyand High-Risk Situations:
  • Recognize signs of complications, suchas fetal distress, preeclampsia, and hemorrhage, and initiateappropriate interventions or escalate care as needed.
  • Respond toobstetric emergencies, such as shoulder dystocia, uterine rupture,and neonatal resuscitation, utilizing appropriate protocols andteamwork.
  • Administer medications and interventions for high-riskpregnancies, including managing complications like hypertension,gestational diabetes, or infections.
  • Patient Education andAdvocacy:
  • Provide education and support to patients and familiesregarding labor, delivery options, newborn care, and postpartumrecovery.
  • Advocate for patient preferences and informeddecision-making, ensuring that patients have access to theresources they need to make choices about their care.
