Hartford Hospital has implementeda comprehensive transition to practice program for novice operatingroom nurses. This program aligns with Hartford Healthcare’s valuesof excellence, safety, caring and integrity by offering a blendedand multimodal approach to ensuring novice OR nurses master thenecessary competencies to provide high quality and safe patientcare. Candidates are hired into the OR Transition to PracticeProgram in cohorts. Below are the cohort start dates for 2025 andapplication deadlines: • August 11 th , 2025 (Application DeadlineJune 27 th , 2025) • November 3 rd , 2025 (Application DeadlineSeptember 19 th , 2025) The OR Transition to Practice Program isopen to new graduate registered nurses and experienced nurses(non-OR experience). This 12-month long program is divided into twomain phases: Introduction to

Perioperative Nursing :

During thefirst 5 months of the program, learners can expect to be immersedin a multimodal learning experience through evidence-based learningmodules (AORN Periop 101), classroom/group learning, simulation andclinical experiences to master the foundational perioperative nursecompetencies. To facilitate the ideal learning experience, theschedule during this initial learning period will be Monday -Friday 7a-3:30p. At completion of phase one of the OR RN Transitionto Practice Program, the learner will complete their Periop 101final exam. Clinical Orientation (Unit Specific) : The remaining6-7 months are spent immersed in the clinical environment masteringthe unit-based nursing competencies. You will follow yourdepartmental schedule and mirror that of your preceptor(s). Thisportion of the program is tailored to the unique needs of thelearner and the unit in which they are employed (see more abouteach eligible unit below). Additional components of this portion ofthe program include professional practice, professional developmentand professional governance. Throughout the entirety of theprogram, learners can expect to be mentored by their unit-basedpreceptors, management team and members of the Nursing ProfessionalDevelopment team (Unit Nurse Educators). You will meet regularly toensure you are supported and set up for success in your new role.

New graduate nurses will also be enrolled in our HartfordHealthcare Graduate Nurse Residency program to facilitate theirtransition to professional nursing practice. The Role of the

ORNurse:

Operating Room (OR) nurses, also known as perioperativenurses, play a crucial role in providing care before, during, andafter surgery. They work closely with the surgical team to deliversafe, high-quality care and are responsible for ensuring patientsafety throughout the perioperative environment. OR nurses may takeon various roles in the surgical team, depending on theirresponsibilities.

Scrub Nurse :

Scrub nurses work directly withinthe sterile field and assist the surgical team by preparinginstruments, equipment, and sterile supplies, passing instrumentsto the surgeon during the procedure, maintaining a sterileenvironment, and monitoring instruments and supplies used duringsurgery to ensure nothing is misplaced.

Circulating Nurse :

Circulating nurses manage the overall environment of the operatingroom by ensuring all surgical tools, supplies, and equipment areavailable and working, monitoring the patient’s safety andwell-being throughout the surgery, maintaining documentation andrecords of the procedure, communicating between the surgical teamand other departments (such as pathology or radiology) andanticipating the needs of the surgical team, and providingadditional instruments, medications, or equipment as necessary.

ELIGIBLE OR UNITS
Core OR :

The Core Operating Room (OR) providescare to a diverse group of patients across multiple surgicalspecialties. These specialties include general surgery, ear, nose,and throat (ENT), colorectal, oral maxillofacial, trauma,transplant, vascular access, bariatrics, urology, gynecology,thoracic, and robotics. The Core OR team is also responsible forensuring 24/7 operating room coverage, offering staff a range ofalternative scheduling options. Additionally, there are numerousopportunities for team members to engage in innovation andcontinued learning with new equipment and procedures.

Neuro OR :

The Neuro Operating Room (OR) team provides highly specialized carefor patients undergoing neuro and spine surgeries. Conditionstreated include brain tumors, vascular malformations, essentialtremors, degenerative spine disease, chronic back pain, neuro/spinetrauma, spinal cord injuries, infections, hydrocephalus, andcomplications from acute stroke. Nurses play a critical role indelivering this specialized care, ensuring patient safety andwell-being throughout these complex procedures.

Cardio-Vascular OR:

The Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) provides specializedcare for patients undergoing cardiac or vascular surgery. Commonprocedures in the CVOR include coronary artery bypass surgery,valve replacements, heart transplants, aortic artery repairs,vascular bypass, endarterectomies, and endovascular and hybridcardiac and vascular surgeries. Nurses in the CVOR are integralmembers of a highly functioning and dynamic interdisciplinary team,working closely with cardiac and vascular surgeons, advancedpractice providers, surgical technologists, perfusionists,anesthesia providers, and support staff.

Ambulatory OR :

TheAmbulatory Operating Room provides care for same-day surgerypatients. Although it functions as an outpatient surgical center,the Ambulatory OR delivers specialized surgical care to individualswith complex medical conditions. Surgical service lines coveredinclude colorectal, dental, ear, nose, and throat (ENT), generalsurgery, gynecology, urology, urogynecology, oral maxillofacial,ophthalmology, plastics, and pediatrics. The Ambulatory OR plays acrucial role in reducing the need for extended hospital stays,offering patients high-quality, efficient care to patients who canrecover safely at home.

Bone and Joint Institute OR :

The Bone andJoint Institute specializes in surgical interventions fororthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions. The care providedincludes closed and open fracture repairs, tendon and ligamentinjury repairs, joint replacements, spine surgeries, podiatricprocedures, and joint arthroscopy, among other treatments. Staffhave the privilege of working in a state-of-the-art facilityalongside a highly specialized and dynamic team of orthopedicsurgeons, podiatrists, advanced practice providers, and otherhealthcare professionals.

Qualifications Qualifications:

CurrentConnecticut nursing license required prior to start date. BasicLife Support (BLS) certification required at time of hire. Exposureto perioperative nursing practice environment preferred (SummerStudent Nurse Fellow, Capstone Rotation, employment inperioperative services in a non-licensed capacity).
