Essential Job Responsibilities/ExpectationsJob OverviewThe Telephone Triage Nurse is responsible for providing telephonic triage to patients across a range of medical conditionsusing established protocols. A telephone triage nurse must be organized and reliable and have the ability to effectively manage patient phone calls providing telephonic nursing assessments and guidance. Triage nurses use their clinical expertise to triage and determine the urgency of patient reported symptoms and provide recommendations that direct patients to the appropriate care setting. The individual will need to possess a solid understanding of assessment techniques and medical protocols. This role requires strong clinical and communication skills to ensure the provision of quality patient care.1. Job responsibilities include those listed in competency documents.2. Maintains a professional image and exhibits excellent customer relations with patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers in accordance with our Service Excellence Standards and Core Values.3. Assess patients’ conditions and medical history to determine urgency and appropriate level of care by conducting thorough and accurate phone-based triage assessments through patient history and symptom reporting.4. Provide immediate medical advice and guidance to patients over the phone with recommendations based on established protocols, clinical guidelines and available resources.5. Provide patients with clear instructions regarding instructions, follow-up care, or where to seek emergency medical attention.6. Document all patient interactions timely and accurately including assessments and interventions in compliance with McLeod Health standards and HIPAA regulations.7. Assist in scheduling appointments, referrals, and follow-up visits.8. Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, protocols, and quality standards.9. Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other health care providers to ensure proper patient care and continuity of care.10. Participate in regular training and continuing education to stay updated with medical practices, standard of workand to enhance clinical skills.11. Offer compassionate or emotional support to patients or family members during stressful or uncertain medical scenarios.12. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Training:
  • Proficiency in using medical software and electronic health records (EHR) systems
  • Strong multitasking and organizational skills
  • Compassionate and empathetic nature
  • Strong teamwork and collaborative skills
  • Ability to work independently while adhering to established guidelines and protocols
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities both written and verbal. Must be able to explain complex medical information clearly and with a kind and gentle nature

  • Attention to detail in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities effectively
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
Education/Certifications/Licenses:
  • Valid and current Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing, with preferred experience in emergency, urgent care, telehealth or triage nursing, or primary care settings
  • Previous experience in a triage or telehealth role preferred,
