Travel A Registered Nurse (RN)•Cardiovascular specializes in the care of patients withcardiovascular conditions, including heart disease, heart failure,arrhythmias, and post-operative heart surgery care. Working invarious settings such as cardiology clinics, cardiovascular units,intensive care units (ICU), or during heart procedures, the RNprovides expert assessment, monitoring, treatment, and education tomanage and treat cardiovascular health issues. This role requiresan in-depth knowledge of cardiovascular diseases, advancedassessment skills, and the ability to respond rapidly to changes inpatient conditions.
Key Responsibilities :
Patient Assessment and Monitoring :
Conduct thorough cardiovascular assessments, including takingdetailed health histories, performing physical exams, andmonitoring vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, oxygensaturation). Monitor patients for signs of complications such asarrhythmias, heart failure, or myocardial infarction. Utilize advanced monitoring equipment (e.g., telemetry, ECG,Holter monitors) to assess heart rhythms, blood pressure, andoxygen levels. Track changes in patients’ conditions and immediately reportsignificant findings to the healthcare team for timelyinterventions.
Clinical Care and Procedures :
Administer prescribed medications, including antihypertensives,anticoagulants, diuretics, and antiarrhythmic drugs, whilemonitoring for side effects and therapeutic effectiveness. Assist with diagnostic procedures such as stress tests, cardiaccatheterizations, echocardiograms, and angioplasty, and providepatient education related to these procedures. Provide pre•and post-operative care for patients undergoingcardiovascular surgeries, including coronary artery bypass graft(CABG), valve replacements, or arrhythmia surgeries. Manage postoperative care, including monitoring cardiac output,fluid balance, pain management, and preventing complications suchas infection or blood clots.
Care Plan Development :
Collaborate with cardiologists, surgeons, and other healthcareproviders to develop personalized care plans for patients withcardiovascular conditions. Adjust care plans based on patient progress, test results, andchanges in clinical status. Support the patient in managing chronic cardiovascularconditions, such as heart failure or hypertension, with ongoingeducation and lifestyle changes.
Patient and Family Education :
Educate patients and families on managing cardiovasculardiseases, including heart disease prevention, dietarymodifications, physical activity, and the importance of medicationadherence. Provide instruction on monitoring for signs of cardiovascularcomplications, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, swelling,or dizziness, and when to seek immediate medical care. Offer support and guidance to patients and families coping withthe emotional aspects of heart disease and recovery, includingstress management and mental health considerations.
Emergency Response and Critical Care :
Respond promptly to cardiovascular emergencies such asarrhythmias, heart attacks, or cardiac arrest, providinglife-saving interventions including CPR, defibrillation, andadvanced cardiac life support (ACLS). Manage patients experiencing acute cardiovascular conditions,such as myocardial infarctions or severe arrhythmias, ensuringtimely and effective treatment. Monitor and manage patients receiving thrombolytic therapy,mechanical circulatory support, or other advanced cardiacinterventions.
Coordination of Care :
Coordinate patient care with interdisciplinary healthcareteams, ensuring comprehensive care through collaboration withcardiologists, primary care providers, physical therapists,dietitians, and social workers. Ensure that appropriate diagnostic tests, treatments, andfollow-up care are scheduled and provided. Assist in arranging referrals for patients needing advancedcare, including heart transplants or specialized cardiologycare.
Documentation and Reporting :
Document patient assessments, interventions, and outcomesaccurately in the electronic medical record (EMR) according tofacility protocols. Report any changes in patient conditions, including adversereactions to medications or complications from treatments, to themedical team promptly. Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, documentationrequirements, and quality improvement initiatives.
Quality Improvement and Professional Development :
Participate in cardiovascular care quality improvementprograms, monitoring outcomes, identifying areas for improvement,and ensuring adherence to evidence-based guidelines. Stay updated on the latest developments in cardiovascular care,including new treatments, medications, and technologies. Engage in continuous learning and professional development,attending conferences, workshops, and pursuing certificationsrelated to cardiovascular nursing (e.g., CCRN, CMC, CSC).
