Public Health Nurse – Preventive Health

Dameron Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37917 Purpose of Job The purpose of this classification is to care for patients in the Preventive Health Clinic. Essential Functions The Preventive Health PHN is responsible for the following essential functions: Assesses need for and administer immunizations for all ages per PHN protocol Conducts client physical assessments per PHN protocol noting normal and deviations from normal Provide client education and counseling, identify resources, and refer as indicated Issue or administers medications to patients per PHN protocol or as prescribed by provider Monitor clinic medication supply, and storage conditions as directed Checks lab reports for abnormalities and informs appropriate medical professional in charge; files lab reports appropriately, clinic process Reviews lab results and follows up accordingly per clinic process Conduct point-of-care testing as indicated per PHN protocol Obtains lab specimens through venipuncture, urine collection, and compartment swabs, and/or other methods as directed Process and package lab specimens for shipping per Tennessee Department of Health lab manual Assist physician or Nurse Practitioner as required with patient visits Instruct patients regarding special tests ordered by providers; distribute pamphlets detailing medical tests and procedures. •

Performs nursing field visits as necessary, may include home visiting Prepare, maintain, and restock exam space and equipment per infection control guidelines and standard nursing practice Minimum Training & Qualifications Associate’s degree in nursing with one year of previous medical facility experience Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered for employment into the position Current and unencumbered license as a registered nurse in the state of Tennessee Must be able to perform and interpret certain lab tests May be required to maintain a valid Tennessee Driver’s license depending on work assignment Must have reliable transportation Specialized Knowledge Maintains basic life support
