Summary:

Responsible for providing and coordinating comprehensiverespiratory care. The Respiratory therapist administers respiratorycare procedures and modalities in accordance with establishedstandards, policies, and procedures. Using evidence-basedpractices, clinical decision making, and skilled communication, thetherapist compassionately leads efforts to create the safestpatient environment and the best patient experience across thecontinuum.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Uses Respiratory therapyprocesses to support assessment of patient utilizing a variety ofskills such as pulmonary diagnostics, chest radiograph, hemodynamicvalues, laboratory values, and correlates blood gases andelectrolytes. Can identify and address the special needs of patientpopulation specific to department services.
  • Operates specializedventilators in critical and non-critical care venues. Assistsphysician with bedside or other procedures as applicable tofacility.
  • Provides medication treatments and therapies perphysician order and/or patient driven respiratory protocols asprescribed.
  • Cleans, maintains, and ensures proper functionalityof equipment. Troubleshoots equipment as necessary and identifiesthe need for service and/or repair.
  • Educates and instructspatients in purpose, technique, self-care, goal of therapy, anddisease management.
  • Facilitates clinical problem solving andcollaborates with other departments to provide education onmanaging patients.
  • Under physician direction, the respiratorytherapist must be able to adapt and comply to policies andprocedures for a variety of different service areas, perform tasksand/or special duties as required by assignment and maintainperformance standards and organizational behaviors.
  • Demonstrateseffective communication, feedback, and conflict resolution skills.

Provides clear, concise, timely, and accurate patient handoff.

  • Promotes a culture of safety by recognizing and applying propersafety measures to prevent patient harm. Reports patient safetyevents and near misses in a timely manner. Seeks to identifypotential safety issues and assists in the implementation ofcorrective actions.
  • Teaches, educates, and precepts newteammates, orientees, and students.
  • Must be able to demonstrateknowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to theage of the patients served.

Must demonstrate knowledge of theprinciples of growth and development over the life span and possessthe ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status andinterpret the appropriate information needed to identify eachpatient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs.

Licensure, Registration, and/or

Certification Required:
  • Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license issued by the state inwhich the team member practices.
  • Active Registered RespiratoryTherapist (RRT) credential issued by the National Board forRespiratory Care (NBRC) within 12 months OR active CertifiedRespiratory Therapist (CRT) credential issued by the NBRC ifcredential received prior to January 1, 2023.
  • Basic Life Support(BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the AmericanHeart Association (AHA).

Education Required:

Graduate from an accredited respiratory care program, with aminimum of an associate degree.

  • Proficient computer skills, use of e-mail and electronic medicalrecord systems.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal),listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates human relationskills with the ability to develop rapport and maintain positive,professional relationships with a variety of patients, teammembers, and physicians. Ability to take initiative and workcollaboratively with others.
  • Demonstrates time management skillswith an ability to multi-task and prioritize in an environment withfrequent interruptions.
Physical Requirements and WorkingConditions:
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job
  • Must be able to lift 50 lb object from knee to waist.
  • Must beable to lift 50 lb from floor to waist height occasionally.
  • Mustbe able to lift 40 lb at waist height and carry it across variousdistances.
  • Must be able to lift 20 lb from waist to overhead.
  • Must be able to push/pull while utilizing 30 of force occasionallyfor long distances.
  • Must demonstrate stand-pivot transfer frombed to chair.
  • Must perform sliding transfer of 150 lbs. person ona sheet across 2 feet with a second person.
  • Must utilize safebody mechanics at all times.
