Job Profile Summary This role focuses on assessing the needs ofpatients who have physical, mental, or emotional disabilities anddelivering therapy services to improve their developmental,physical or cognitive impairment. In addition, this role focuses onperforming the following Respiratory Therapy duties: Evaluatespatients and helps them improve physical and mental conditionsthrough treating cardiopulmonary related dysfunction. Aprofessional individual contributor role that may direct the workof other lower level professionals or manage processes andprograms. The majority of time is spent overseeing the design,implementation or delivery of processes, programs and policiesusing specialized knowledge and skills typically acquired throughadvanced education. An experienced level role that appliespractical knowledge of job area typically obtained through advancededucation and work experience. Works independently with generalsupervision, problems faced are difficult but typically notcomplex, and may influence others within the job area throughexplanation of facts, policies and practices. Job Overview Thisposition is responsible for respiratory care for patients of allage groups, who are diagnosed with cardio-pulmonary dysfunction.

Sets up various types of equipment to administer prescribed dosesof medicinal gases and aerosolized drugs. Administers all types ofrespiratory therapy treatments including, oxygen delivery,mechanical ventilator management, diagnostic procedures (e.g.,blood gas sampling and analysis, bedside pulmonary functiontesting, pulse oximetry, EKG’s, BCLS, function and troubleshootingof respiratory therapy equipment). Works cooperatively withindepartment and other services to create a system of quality healthcare.

Job Description Minimum Qualifications:

1. Associate’s degreefrom an accredited Respiratory Care program. 2. Licensed by thestate of Massachusetts to provide respiratory care. 3. RegisteredRespiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist(CRT) 4. One (1) year of experience as a Registered RespiratoryTherapist. 5. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

PreferredQualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited RespiratoryCare program. 2. Two (2) years of experience as a RegisteredRespiratory Therapist.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties andresponsibilities listed below are intended to describe the generalnature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list.

Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned. 1. Initiatespatients on invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation;routinely checks and maintains proper function of ventilator inconjunction with the physician order. 2. Abides with infectioncontrol guideline for invasive and non-invasive equipment perdepartmental policy. Changes and adjusts ventilator parametersbased on clinical assessment and blood gas analysis in accordancewith physician orders. 3. Weans patients from mechanicalventilation and other therapies through patient assessment andadjusting parameters within prescribed protocols. 4. Administerinhaled medications in accordance with institutional guidelinesderived from the department of respiratory care and pharmacy. 5.Administers oxygen using low flow, high flow, open and closedcircuits. 6. Embodies patient and family centered care. Explainsprocedures to patients and family. 7. Provides services to analyzeblood specimens for blood gases, glucose and electrolytes inneonatal and pediatric intensive care units. 8. AdministersPositive Pressure Breathing, (e.g. CPAP or BiPAP), which consistsof the application of positive pressure to the upper airway topromote better lung inflation and aerosol distribution. 9.Routinely assists in the transport of patients requiringlife-support to and from referral hospitals. 10. Provides in-housetransport of mechanically ventilated and other high-risk patients.11. Provides non-traditional therapies, e.g. Nitric Oxide gasadministration, as ordered. 12. Provides resuscitation and supportservices at all high-risk deliveries. 13. Monitors effectiveness oftherapy using non-invasive techniques such as pulse oximetry, endtidal CO2 and transcutaneous PO2/PCO2, in addition to invasivetechniques such as arterial blood gas sampling. 14. Analyzesinspired oxygen concentration using various oxygen analyzers. 15.Calibrates monitors and maintains Transcutaneous Oxygen Monitors,End Tidal CO2 and pulse Oximetry monitors. 16 Assists inCardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation as part of Code Team primarilyproviding airway management and manual resuscitation. Commonlyadministers drugs via the endotracheal tube during cardiopulmonaryrescue e.g. Lidocaine, Atropine Sulfate and Epinephrine. 17.Documents therapy, patient assessment, and interventions performedand test results in the progress notes of the medical record in aconcise, accurate, and thorough manner. 18. Transcribe a detailedshift note for all patient’s cared for during the shift. 19.Responsible for acknowledging the proper assembly of allrespiratory therapy equipment prior to and during patient use. 20.Performs daily rounds and fairly bills patients for servicesrendered. Attend rounds daily with the intensive care unit criticalcare team and is an active participant in the patient’s care. 21.Assists with development of in-service programs for departmentalpersonnel. 22. Assists the Associate Director with the orientationof new employees; acts as a preceptor for new employees and isutilized as a clinical instructor for students enrolled in localuniversities.

Physical Requirements:

1. Able to walk and stand forapproximately 90% of the time. 2. Able to transport respiratorytherapy equipment (up to 100 lbs.) using carts or wheels on theequipment to and from patient areas. 3. Able to communicate withand assess the patient needs of different age populations. 4.Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation to operatecomputer keyboard and or respiratory equipment. 5. Requires abilityto see computer screen and reports.

Skills & Abilities:

1.Knowledge of medical terminology, physiology of the cardiopulmonarysystem, and Respiratory Science. 2. Ability to communicateeffectively with all professional staff as well as all patients. 3.Ability to assess patient status and develop treatment plans. 4.Ability to perform all required duties under emergency andstressful situations.
