Travel A Respiratory Therapist(RT) is a licensed healthcare professional who specializes in theassessment, treatment, and care of patients with breathing orcardiopulmonary disorders. Respiratory therapists work withindividuals of all ages, providing care to those with conditionssuch as asthma, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD), sleep apnea, and those requiring life support or mechanicalventilation. They use a variety of techniques and equipment tomanage and improve respiratory function. /n/n

KeyResponsibilities:

/n /n 1. /n

Patient Assessment and Evaluation:

/n/n

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients with respiratoryor cardiopulmonary conditions, including reviewing medical historyand performing physical exams. /n
  • Assess lung function, breathingpatterns, oxygen levels, and other vital signs through non-invasiveand invasive diagnostic procedures. /n
  • Analyze test results,including pulmonary function tests (PFTs), arterial blood gas (ABG)analysis, chest X-rays, and sleep studies.

Developing and Implementing Treatment Plans:

/n /n

  • Collaboratewith physicians to develop and implement personalized treatmentplans for patients with respiratory issues. /n
  • Adjust and monitorventilation settings for patients requiring mechanical ventilationor non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (e.g., CPAP, BiPAP)./n
  • Administer respiratory therapy treatments, including oxygentherapy, nebulizer treatments, pulmonary rehabilitation, and airwayclearance techniques.

Administering RespiratoryTreatments:

/n /n

  • Provide oxygen therapy via nasal cannulas,masks, or mechanical ventilators for patients with respiratorydistress or low oxygen levels. /n
  • Perform aerosol therapy todeliver medication directly to the lungs via inhalers, nebulizers,or other devices. /n
  • Administer incentive spirometry to improvelung function and encourage deep breathing after surgery orillness. /n
  • Provide airway management, including suctioning,endotracheal intubation, and assisting with tracheostomy care.

Monitoring and Evaluating Patient Progress:

/n /n

  • Continuously monitor the effectiveness of respiratory treatmentsand adjust therapy as necessary based on patient responses. /n
  • Assess patients for signs of respiratory distress and intervenepromptly when complications arise. /n
  • Track and document patientprogress, ensuring treatments are tailored to the patient’sevolving needs.

Emergency Response and CriticalCare:

  • Provide emergency respiratory care to patientsexperiencing respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, or otherlife-threatening situations. /n
  • Administer resuscitationtechniques, such as CPR, defibrillation, and advanced airwaymanagement, in emergency situations. /n
  • Assist with intubation,mechanical ventilation, and weaning from life support whennecessary.

Patient Education and Support:

  • Educate patients and families on proper use of respiratoryequipment, medications, and techniques for managing respiratoryconditions at home. /n
  • Provide guidance on lifestyle changes toimprove lung health, such as quitting smoking, controlling asthmatriggers, and managing chronic respiratory diseases. /n
  • Offerinstruction on pulmonary rehabilitation exercises to strengthenlung capacity and improve overall physical health.

Healthcare Team:

/n /n

  • Work closely withphysicians, nurses, physical therapists, and other healthcareprofessionals to develop a holistic care plan for respiratorypatients. /n
  • Attend multidisciplinary care meetings to discusspatient progress, treatment goals, and necessary adjustments. /n
  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families, ensuringthey understand treatment plans and ongoing care needs.

Documentation and Record Keeping:

  • Maintain accurate anddetailed records of patient assessments, treatments, medications,and progress in accordance with healthcare regulations (e.g.,HIPAA). /n
  • Ensure proper documentation for insurance billing,treatment plans, and patient updates. /n
  • Record patient responsesto treatments, including vital signs, oxygen saturation, and anyadverse reactions or complications.

EquipmentManagement:

/n /n

  • Set up and maintain respiratory therapyequipment, such as mechanical ventilators, nebulizers, and oxygendelivery devices. /n
  • Ensure that all respiratory equipment isproperly calibrated, clean, and functioning according to safetystandards. /n
  • Perform troubleshooting and minor repairs onrespiratory equipment as needed.

ProfessionalDevelopment and Continuing Education:

/n /n

  • Participate incontinuing education opportunities to stay current with newtechniques, equipment, and best practices in respiratory therapy./n
  • Obtain and maintain certifications such as Basic Life Support(BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). /n
