Job DescriptionJob SummaryAssess, treat, and care for patientswith breathing disorders. Assume primary responsibility for allrespiratory care modalities, including the supervision ofrespiratory therapy students. Initiate and conduct therapeuticprocedures; maintain patient records; and select, assemble, check,and operate equipment. Respiratory Therapists assigned to thepulmonary functions lab, responsible for performing diagnosticcardiopulmonary evaluations and respiratory therapy treatmentsdesigned to care for patients with deficiencies and dysfunctions ofthe cardiopulmonary system. The Pulmonary function technologistsprimarily perform diagnostic tests. These tests can includespirometry, diffusion testing, lung volumes, airway resistance,respiratory muscle forces, bronchial provocation testing, assistingwith bronchoscopy, CPX testing and other tests that a doctororders. They must also be able to calibrate, clean and maintaindiagnostic equipment and recognize when equipment malfunctions.

Essential Functions Measures lung capacity and analyzes blood samples using a bloodgas analyzer. Delivers and assesses response to ordered therapy per plan ofcare. Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition asappropriate. Evaluates respiratory care policies and procedures based onpatient outcomes, current research, and best practices. Responds to codes and calls for emergent assistance. Assessespatient condition and delivers appropriate treatment. Educates the patient and family about the patient’s illness andprovides information about community support groups and otherresources. Monitors, receives, stocks, and distributes respiratory caresupplies and medical gas cylinders. Maintains storage areas with required supply levels andequipment. Minimum EducationAssociate’s Degree (orequivalent technician program) in Respiratory Carerequired.
Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Care preferred. RequiredSkillsRequires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and theability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in astressful environment and take appropriateaction.

Licenses:
Requires current North Carolina Respiratory CarePractitioner license (RCP) Minimum Work Experience3 yearsexperience as a RRT preferred.
