ECU HealthAbout ECU Health Chowan HospitalECU Health ChowanHospital in Edenton is a 25-bed critical access hospital whichprovides programs and services to 110,000 people in 6 counties. Thefacility offers medical and surgical services, including intensivecare, a specialty care clinic and a dedicated outpatient surgeryarea with endoscopy capabilities. A 7-bed emergency departmentserves approximately 15,000 patients per year and team members atthe facility have access to a telemedicine link with the BrodySchool of Medicine at East Carolina University.

Position SummaryUpto $30K Commitment IncentiveUnder the Clinical Supervision of theMedical Director of Respiratory Care and the overall supervision ofthe Manager of Respiratory Care and Respiratory Care Supervisor theRespiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) provides safe, expedient,cost-effective Respiratory Care services. As a member of a team ofhealth care professionals, an RCP evaluates, treats and managespatients of all ages with respiratory illnesses and othercardiopulmonary disorders in a wide variety of clinical settings.

Respiratory Care Practitioners behave in a manner consistent withthe standards and ethics of all health care professionals. Inaddition to performing respiratory care procedures, RCP’s areinvolved in clinical decision-making (such as patient assessment,treatment selection and reassessment of treatment efficacy), goaldirected respiratory care planning and patient education. RCP’s arerequired to document in the patient medical record factual,accurate, complete, timely, legible and legal information about thecare they provide to each patient. Each RCP is responsible forbilling the patient correctly for the servicesprovided.

Responsibilities1. Demonstrates the knowledge and skillsnecessary to provide service appropriate to the age of the patient.

Assess the appropriateness of prescribed respiratory care byacquiring and evaluating clinical data and assessing thecardiopulmonary and overall status of the patient based on the ageof the patient.2. Initiates a respiratory care plan upon admissionto Respiratory Services identifying primary respiratory problem,goals and interventions. Updates care plan at least once per shiftrelative to the progress toward the goal.3. Initiates respiratorycare, evaluating and monitoring patients’ responses to such care,modifying the prescribed respiratory therapy and cardiopulmonaryprocedures and life support endeavors to achieve desiredtherapeutic objectives. Provides and records all patient and familyeducation in patient medical record. Maintains confidentiality ofall patient information.4. Participates in life-support activitiesas required, responds to Trauma, High Risk Deliveries, and CodeBlue emergencies throughout the hospital. Provides therapeuticinterventions with oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, airway care,lung expansion, bronchial hygiene, invasive and non-invasivemechanical ventilation. Provides and assesses information fromrespiratory parameter studies, peak flow measurements, pulseoximetry monitoring, ABG/VBG/CBG results, capnography, pulmonarymechanics and graphics monitors, hemodynamic monitoring, andcardiac output monitoring. Monitors, provides oxygen and airwaysupport to patients receiving ICD changes.5. Uses universalprecautions appropriately and performs proper handwashing betweeneach patient. Learns and uses Respiratory ‘Red Rules’ and PatientSafety Behaviors to provide safe patient care.6. Uses department’scripts’ to effectively communicate with other departments,patients, families, coworkers and students in person or over thephone.7. Demonstrates safe operation of all equipment in compliancewith department policy, safety, disinfection, infection control andquality control standards. Demonstrates effective computer skillsfor electronic charting, billing and respiratory orderprocessing.8. As directed by the supervisor, may have additionalresponsibility as charge therapist and or preceptor for studentsand or new employees.9. Participates in In-Service Education,Patient Rounds and Conferences and maintains 24 hours continuingeducation credits per year.

Minimum RequirementsAmerican HeartAssociation BLS CertificationAssociate Degree or higher in anapproved CoARC program for Respiratory Care.

Active licensure withthe North Carolina Respiratory Care Board upon hire and ismaintained yearly.

Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) orRegistry Eligible with RRT credential obtained within 1 year ofgraduation.

American Heart Association ACLS, if not current at timeof hire, must complete within first 6 months of Employment andmaintained.

If working in the Children’s hospital you are requiredto have AHA PALS and NRP in place of the AHA ACLS and you must havecompleted the

NBRC NPS

exam by 12 months from your orientation enddate.

For non-medical center Respiratory care departments AHA BLSand ACLS are required. AHA PALS and NRP are required at 6 monthsfrom hire date.0 to 3 years post graduate experience isrequired.
