  • DukeLife Flight is a CAMTS accredited critical care and Emergency Airand Ground transport agency in Durham, NC, providing services toNorth Carolina and its surrounding states.

We operate twostate-of-the-art rotor wing aircraft and a fleet of critical care,and advanced life support ambulances. We are one of few rotor-wingaeromedical Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) capable flight programsin North Carolina. Our respiratory care practitioners with our LifeFlight team transport pediatric, and neonatal patients 24 hours aday, 7 days a week. We provide rapid access to health care forpatients when time, specialized skills, and/or specializedresources are critical for survival.

  • General Description of theJob ClassPerform and evaluate diagnostic and therapeutic clinicalprocedures as defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope ofclinical practice, performing work in accordance with physicianorders in the neonatal, pediatric and adult patient populations
  • Duties and Responsibilities of this LevelPerform all duties andresponsibilities required of a Respiratory Care PractitionerI.

Evaluate appropriateness of medical orders.

Proficient in theapplication of mechanical ventilator modalities.

Proficient in theapplication of Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NPPV);Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and Bi-Level PositiveAirway Pressure (BiPAP)Perform endotracheal intubation under theobservation of a Supervisor or Advanced Practitioner. Performextubations.

Serve as member of the code/ emergency team. Administermedical gases.

Insert nasogastric and orogastric tubes.

Performtracheotomy tube changes. Perform capnography monitoring.

Transportpatients requiring mechanical ventilation or airwayprotection.

Interpret clinical data to optimize patient clinicalobjectives.

Participate in clinical rounds with physicians, nursesand other health care providersAssist with Bronchoscopy. Assistwith orientation and training of Level II RT.Assure safe operationsof devices in the MRI.Qualified for certification in the hyperbaricchamber if applicable to the institution scope of practice-Required Qualifications at this LevelEducationCompletion of a twoyear AMA approved Respiratory Care Program

  • (Associates Degree orthe equivalent).

Must maintain annual skill maintenance and annualsafety/compliance requirementsMust maintain North Carolina annuallicense requirements for CEUsExperienceA minimum of three years(preference of four years) experience in clinical respiratorytherapy, including a minimum of one year in intensive carerespiratory therapy within a neonatal or pediatric ICU.Advancedcertification required (C-NPT) within two years of hire. If hiredwith critical care transport experience, C-NPT or NPS certificationhighly preferred.

  • Knowledge,Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge necessary to make appropriateclinical decisions and interaction relative to the specific age ofa patient.

Skills validation/certification of competencies for theduties and responsibilities required for a Level I RT.Skillsvalidation / certifications of competencies for the duties andresponsibilities of this level. Work involves contact with patientsof all ages, family members, physicians, nursing, and all othermembers of the health care team.

Work is performed in all areas ofthe hospital.

Work may require lifting or pushing in excess of 30pounds.

Required to carry emergency airway bag weighingapproximately 20 pounds.

Work requires walking, running, climbingand bending. Customer service and communication expertise.
