OccupationalSummary Perform and evaluate diagnostic and therapeutic clinicalprocedures as defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope ofclinical practice, performing work in accordance with physicianorders in the neonatal, pediatric and adult patient populations.
Work Performed Perform all duties and responsibilities required ofa Respiratory Care Practitioner I. Evaluate appropriateness ofmedical orders. Proficient in the application of mechanicalventilator modalities. Proficient in the application ofNon-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NP PV). ContinuousPositive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and Bi-Level Positive AirwayPressure (BiPAP)Perform endotracheal intubation under theobservation of a Supervisor or Advanced Practitioner. Performextubations. Serve as member of the code/emergency team. Administermedical gases. Insert nasogastric and orogastric tubes. Performtracheotomy tube changes. Perform capnography monitoring. Transportpatients requiring mechanical ventilation or airway protection.
Interpret clinical data to optimize patient clinical objectives.
Participate in clinical rounds with physicians, nurses and otherhealth care providers. Assist with Bronchoscopy. Assist withorientation and training of Level IIRT. Assure safe operations ofdevices in the MRI. Qualified for certification in the hyperbaricchamber if applicable to the institution scope of practice. MinimumQualifications Education Completion of a 2-year AMA approvedrespiratory care program requirements (Associates Degree or theequivalent). Must maintain annual skill maintenance requirementsMust maintain annual safety/compliance Must maintain North Carolinaannual license requirements for CEUs Experience Six months to oneyear of clinical experience following graduation from a respiratorycare program. Degrees, Licensures, Certifications North CarolinaState Licensure. Registry (RRT) by the National Association forRespiratory Care (NBRC). Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certificationin Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Certification inNeonatal Resuscitation (NRPS) if applicable to institution.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge necessary to makeappropriate clinical decisions and interactions relative to thespecific age of a patient. Skills validation/certifications ofcompetencies for the duties and responsibilities of this level.

Work involves contact with patients of all ages, familymembers, physicians, nursing, and all other members of the healthcare team. Work is performed in all areas of Duke Hospital Work mayrequire lifting or pushing in excess of 30 pounds. Work requireswalking, climbing and bending.
