JobDescriptionPerform diagnostic and therapeutic clinical proceduresas defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of clinicalpractice. Work performed in accordance with physician orders andunder supervision of a Registered Respiratory Therapist.
Duties andResponsibilities-Verify physician orders for appropriateness andaccuracy
- Understand pharmacological indications, dosages andresponse to adverse drug reactions
- Consults with providers basedon patient care assessments and in accordance to acceptedprotocols. Provides education to patients, families, physicians,nursing and other members of the health care team
- Monitorsresponse to all therapy.
Documents in the patient medical record.
Communicates all pertinent clinical information during patientrounds and handoff
- Perform diagnostic cardiopulmonary procedures;inclusive of nasotracheal and artificial airway suctioning andsamples, arterial blood gas punctures, pulse oximetry and EtCO2monitoring, pulmonary function and bedside pulmonary mechanics, andEKG’s
- Recognizes life threatening situations and initiatesappropriate response, perform CPR and bag
- mask ventilation-Assurecorrect set-up, safety and function of all equipment/ suppliesnecessary in the provision of patient care
- Assure adherence to allinfectious disease standards in the delivery of all patient careprocedures
- Participates in quality improvementactivities
- Maintains all necessary safety and life supportcertifications per required

- Required Qualifications atthis LevelEducationActive enrollment in a 2 year approvedrespiratory care program (Associates Degree or the equivalent) andis in good standing.&
- Completion of the first semester of therespiratory care program.
ExperienceNone required beyond clinicalaffiliation of the respiratory program.
Degrees, Licensure, and/orCertificationThe student RCP must register with the Board beforeproviding Respiratory Care procedures as a Respiratory CareAssistant and will receive an approval letter from the Board. Thestudent RCP will provide a copy of the approval letter to theemployer.
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and any othercertifications applicable to the institution.
Knowledge, Skills, andAbilitiesKnowledge necessary to make appropriate clinical decisionsand interactions relative to the specific age of a patient.
Skillsvalidation/certifications of competencies for the duties andresponsibilities of this level.
Must maintain annual skillrequirements.
Must maintain annual safety/compliancerequirements.
Must maintain North Carolina annual licenserequirements for CEU’sCustomer service and communicationexpertise.
Work involves contact with patients of all ages, familymembers, physicians, nursing, and all other members of the healthcare team.
Work is performed in all areas of Duke University HealthSystem, at applicable hiring location.
Work may require lifting orpushing in excess of 30 pounds.
Work requires walking, climbing andbending.
